Technically, players have paid for the house and the land in full. Owners before never had to pay this extra money to maintain the houses, and banks cannot suddenly start charging you a monthly fee after the contract's been signed and the money paid.

What this is, is a government taxation law coupled with eminent domain. I know it's a technicality, but essentially it's a change in government law that is increasing taxes on the land owners. The government then pays the owner fair market value for the house (usually much lower than what you expected, what a surprise), and then takes the land from you to do with it whatever it wants (because the land you live on and paid for is still technically your government's).

Also, I don't see understand this myth about multi-home owners being cheaters. They got around the system early on it's true, and it is a little unfair for them to own two houses when so many people are without, but I wouldn't call anything they did as a cheat (unless they actually bought gil or RMT'd).

Oh really? They've paid in gil, our in-game currency. So if SE would start charging us more gil that statment would make more sense. I'm looking at this way: While I earned the right to have a house (or earned enough gil... however you want to express that) all the data is still stored at the servers of SE - and those arent running for free. I'm paying real money for my sub and for that service - that not only include the housing but a lot of other stuff... but with SE always saying "we cant add more storage because servers cant handle it" I feel a bit... bitter about people saying "hey, I wont pay for your service - so please store all my data for free until I come back!". I'm not an expert on programming but I would suppose that its a lot more stress on the server to store a house (with furniture) than you retainers/personal inventory. But with housing being such a limited thing... npt paying for the service? Let someone have it who is paying for it then!

It might would be some sort of a compromiss for personal homes to give the "power" of resetting the timer to everyone you've marked as a "friend of the house" (sorry, no better way to put it right now - what I'm meaning by that: The system they wanted to add to share the house with a few people that you would have to pick first - therefor it would be like a small FC)

I'm not really arguing that SE is incorrect here or that they shouldn't charge players for the extra memory. I'm just saying the analogy to mortgage and foreclosure is incorrect and that a more appropriate analogy is property tax and eminent domain.
