Personally, I really hope they will eventually extend the period to 60 days or more. I do understand that the already inactive house owners should be weeded out a bit quicker than that, but in the long run 45 days just seems a bit short to me.

It wouldn't seem nearly as short to me if it hadn't been for two things.
1) There's expensive/hard-to-get furniture that can't be removed once placed, and that is lost completely if your house is lost. (I'm calling them hard-to-get due to the fact that they require people to run old duties synched in order to get rare drops from raid bosses or primals. If SE were to move those drops into chest drops so you still had a chance to get them while unsynched, it'd be less of a concern to me.)

2) Once your house is lost, the time you have to get your money and furniture back is limited. This was a major concern in LotRo as well, when they implemented loss of property for failure to pay upkeep fees for a longer time (usually happening by not logging in for a longer time). Once they made the furniture and house price refund available without a time limit, people stopped complaining as much.
