    New player looking for help

I'm fairly new to MMORPG's the only one i've played for a length of time was Archeage. With that being said I'm just looking for advice on what order I need to do things. I'm currently a level 13 Lancer. I just starting playing Saturday. I have joined the lancer guild as it told me to and done the quests, I want to get into gathering, crafting and farming. After doing some reading today it looks like I need to join a grand company but thats pretty much all I know.

    Should I:
    Join a free company.
Join the Disciples of land or hand guilds? If so how many?

This game is just so in depth its a little overwhelming to a noob like me at first and could use some guidance.

Yes, you should join a free company, because you can enjoy a lot of benefits and get help and guidance in game from other FC members. Don't take the first offer. Look at the company and see what their rank is and whether they have housing. That will give you an idea of what they have to offer. A rank 8 with a house is pretty well equipped to help you.

Wait to pick up some DoH/DoL until you reach the part of main scenario where you have to join a grand company. You can do daily "turn ins" for each discipline that will level you faster, and get you grand company seals.

For what disciplines, I recommend both mining and botany, and the jobs that pair well with those are goldsmith, weaver, and carpenter. I chose weaver and goldsmith with my alt and ended up picking up leatherworking bc a lot of leather goods are used for weaving.

Also, if you join a free company with housing, they will usually have crafting and/or leveling buffs turned on. They may have a vendor at the house and crafting tables to help your crafting as well.

Joining a free company is optional, its like guilds in other MMOs ther just called free company's in this game. There a great way to meet other players, Some FC focus on sertin parts of the game like PvE, PvP, Rp, Raid..etc. And there great if you need help with dungons and such.

Joining a Disciples of land or hand is great for making gil. You can unlock them all and lvl them all if you so wish to. This is the same for Disciples of War and Magic. I sagest lvling a Disciples of War or Magic first before you really focus on lvling Disciples of land and or hand. As youll need to unlock areas(like Ishgard) to get mats and stuff for them.

All mmos can be a bit overwhelming at first, you'll get it thou in time.

Not sure if you're confusing the two, but Free Company (FC) is a group of players who join together to help each other, socialize, and get various in-game benefits from that cooperation. Grand Company (GC) is the military arm of one of the three main cities (the Twin Adder of Gridania, the Immortal Flames of Ul'dah, or the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa). The main storyline will involve joining a Grand Company, so that part you will do in order to continue through the rest of the game. Joining a Free Company is optional but highly recommended.

If you're interested in them, you can join the ones there in Gridania now and try it out a bit. When you get to the level 15 quests in the main scenario storyline, you'll be sent as an envoy from Gridania to the other main city-states, Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa. At that point you can join the guilds located there as well.

But you should probably consider this first bit as trying it out to see if you like it (though keeping in mind that it will get more complex as you go up in levels and learn more skills). You'll quickly run out of inventory space if you try to get very far in crafting and gathering before unlocking retainers. Retainers are NPC assistants who do several things for you, including holding extra inventory items and selling stuff for you on the Market Board. They get unlocked by a level 17 Main Scenario quest "Scions of the Seventh Dawn". Once you've gotten that far in the story and hired a couple retainers, then you can get further into the crafting classes.

Crafting in this game is completely optional. Some players like it and focus a lot of their attention there. Others don't ever do any crafting at all. Either works; it's purely a matter of what you enjoy. Those who do get really involved in the crafting system usually end up advancing all eight of the crafting classes and either all three of the gathering classes or at least Botanist and Miner. It helps to do all of them, partially because they provide skills that can be used cross-class (learned by one class and then usable by the others), and partially because they provide materials for each other (like armorer recipes that use some leather provided by leatherworker, or leatherworker recipes that also use some cloth provided by weaver, etc.)

Yeah, there's a lot to do. The things to not lose track of are the Main Scenario Quests (the ones with the flaming ring around the quest icon rather than the Q symbol) which give you the main story and unlock features throughout the rest of the game, and your class quests (which you'll get each 5 levels from the guild hall of every class you unlock). Explore everything else as you please.

    Welcome to the game.

You will select a Grand company as part of the story. This ends up like choosing a Faction in PvP. There is no difference between them, so pick any that you want.

The Free Company is the equivalent of an MMO guild. Usually, these are a group of players with interests in one or more aspects of the game: raiding, housing, etc. Larger and more established FCs will generally have more resources for you to use. You might not actually get to use all these resources straight off, but they have a larger capacity. FCs have different cultures between them, so make sure the FC culture fits you best. It's like a company. You will be spending a lot of time together, so make sure you can get along well with them. The biggest resource for crafters from a FC are the leveling boosts to crafters they can give (if they have the workshop items), and the vendor npcs which give your cheap mats to craft everything up to lv.20.

Take a look at linkshells (LS) for developing your network and friends. These are more like social circles and private channels than guilds. You can be in a maximum of 8 at a time and they can be much more social and likely to teach your= the ropes. Look for a friendly beginner LS first and then join a FC of someone in your LS you think is a good mentor or who you get along with.

Crafters and gatherers are not mandatory at all. If you are interested in leveling them though, you will want to level all crafters to 15 first. The cross-class skills will allow you to create high quality almost all the time (especially once you get carpenter, goldsmith, alchemist, and culinarian). The rest come at levels 38 and 50, but every cross-class skill is useful in crafting items after level 50.

If you go in to farming, I would recommend mining and botanist to be at least level 53. This is to provide you with seeds to plant (botanist) and soil to get fertilizer (mining)that increases yields or cross-pollination to create unique plants only obtainable with farming. You will also need a house for this. You can use your FC house, but other members may be using it and as a new member, you may be squeezed out. Again, it's about the culture.

If you buy your own house, keep in mind the base price on a small house is 20million gil. Larges houses are somewhere around 300million gil, and this was before the expansion. Prices will likely be a lot higher this time around because it's easier to make Gil at level 60. The cost does reduce to half over time, but then you will be competing with a lot of other players over it. Crafters and gatherers are a good way to make money, but you need to be very well geared to make that much money quickly.
