New players want to be able to play alongside their friends, and their friends most likely would prefer doing the latest content over helping a friend(who may not even stay with the game) trudge through the lengthy MSQ.

Agreed. And the fact is, the MSQ doesn't really have any branches or direct player interaction so it is quite possible for someone new to the game to catch up storyline wise by just reading a recap or watching some videos, and I say that as someone who does like the MSQ. Is that as good as actually playing the MSQ? No, but it's not fair to say that people who want to skip some of the MSQ don't care about the MSQ. Some players just have other interests or would rather jump into what's current instead of wading through the old stuff.
