how is it different from locking on?
Player
It is why myself, & many others I know, have given up on PVP. It is an exploit, it is cheating & it is against the ToS. It can destroy the game for those who want to play properly, especially if it's a team/gang of people using it.
I'd pay SE to allow me to monitor & tag cheats in this game for further investigation, they're ruining it for many of us.

I also really doubt this singular thing was why you and your freinds gave up on pvp

Exactly. I use a Razer Lycosa. It's had this capability since long before FFXIV:ARR was a thing.
And it's not even detectable, either, since the same software also handles manual key presses. The same signal is sent to the OS whether the key press is manual or via the keyboard software macros.
Someone with my keyboard's software or any similar software could have this set up in half a minute, as shown by Ceve.
I, personally, may have no desire to cheat this way, but not everyone cares to play fairly. It would surprise me greatly if there was no one out there using this method to have the face target command spammed in PvP.
Actually you can't do it reliably & constantly using in-game macros because they get interrupted, unlike external macros, which are against the ToS. In fact, anything that gives an unfair advantage or negatively affects the game play of others is also against the ToS, including in-game macros. Just because it can be done without additional software doesn't mean it's acceptable under the ToS.
Also, I bow to your excellent telepathic skills that know what is in my mind, and the mind of others, when we make decisions. -_-
I'll just link the same image again that i did before
Spamming that macro twice or three times a second, while extremely annoying to do and a great way to end up with carpal tunnel syndrome, gives you pretty much exactly the same effect as having an external macro
People complained about auto facetarget to me so i just started using manual face target, the outcome is identical provided i dont stop spamming the key
again, with all the issues pvp has, i really really doubt you and your freinds stopped playing it because of a single thing that barely anyone uses unless you play on JP serversAlso, I bow to your excellent telepathic skills that know what is in my mind, and the mind of others, when we make decisions. -_-
Its not telepathy, its basic reasoning

Isn't there 0,5 sec min of interval between each commands in FFXIV macro ?I'll just link the same image again that i did before

The face target command actually stops your movement if you are running back.
Try making a macro with /facetarget and run away the opposite side. When /facetarget pops it actually stops you for a 0.5 seconds. It can get you destroyed in PvE.
Imagine trying to run out of an AOE circle and your character suddenly stops and jerks for a second. BAD.
/facetarget does root you if your moving the opposite direction. Its not like you can just fire whilst running away.
Make a video with a level 1 weapon and try it in PvE. Try running full speed one side and /facetargeting the other.
