Teach me to lift so i can carry :)

So you have a friend who's ok on a good day.
Which roles / jobs make the best carries?

Do you need the gear to bridge the the gap, or is knowledge the key?

What's the best way to find their problem? (Is watching the fight a world mob a good reflection or do i need to get them in a dungeon)

If it's a friend, knowing their role so you can provide accurate feedback is a good method.

Your freind should carry his/her own weight without you "having" to carry them. Use dummies to check rotations and set the DPS bar (unless your friend is a healer) then try it in hard trials/raids to see real action DPS. That's the only way to identify a problem if any exists.

Send them to Carry Finder so that you don't have to do it yourself... unless they play healer/tank. In that case send them to Duty finder to get battle hardened.

If you do not play their class yourself, then it would be better to send them a guide or two so that they can learn the basics.

First they need to know what to do, what to not to do and then they just need to practice it in a battle.

Generally speaking, Tanks and Healers are the only jobs that really "carry" anything. Gear level helps, as it dictates what numerical limits your character is capable of, but it's really your personal knowledge and skill level that make the most difference. All the gear in the world won't help you carry your team if you yourself don't know the dungeons and trials inside and out. That includes knowing all the mechs (even if your job is not the one responsible for them) and the rotations of the bosses (for proper buff applications and responses) as well as the locations and strengths of all the mobs so you can plan accordingly and successfully manage them.

Dps don't really carry so much as get carried, because, even if your Dps is craptastic, you'll still finish the dungeon/trial so long as the Tanks and healers are up to snuff. The only time Dps really carry anyone is if the fight has a Dps check, but even those are usually not difficult unless it's cutting-edge end-game content (such as Savage Alexander). Though, even those are temporary challenges. Most Dps checks are made irrelevant by the very next patch anyway (since gear levels buff up even the most crappy of Dps), so Dps don't really have to carry anything. They just speed things along if they're good.

**The one exception to this is obviously Raid/ content that are heavy in mechs for Dps. That's not a lot of content though. Usually Tanks and Healers get the majority of mech responsibilities and Dps just have to try their best to not stand in stupid. The Second and Final Coils of Bahamut are probably where Dps carry the most repsonsibility in terms of actual boss mechanics.

I would suggest a dps. Bard and Machinist might be good as they don't output that much dps and it's easy to use mage song or paeon between pulls. You might teach your friend to put foe req on during a fight eventually, but it's more of a bonus for most df runs.

As for damage rotation, there's some bards above level 50 that can give you better advice than me.

    Depends.

If by carry you mean fast dungeon runs, DPS with strong AoE (SMN?).

I agree with Februs but in those terms (that is, plain surviving), I'd say healers are even a step above tanks for carrying. When it comes to survival, a healer can compensate for a bad tank but if half or more the people are dead on the floor, the tank can't do anything while the healer can.

But if you want fast dungeons, DPS is your best bet. As healer you can ensure survival but if you've got two DPS only outputting 300, it will take forever.

No matter what role you carry as, you will need a mixture of gear, skill, and knowledge.

world mobs are mostly lulzy to get them in some real content to diagnose where they're weak.
