How do you deal with sluggish tanks?

I don't know what's their problem. like 80% of the tanks I met are super slow and keep wasting time before each pull, then waste another minute standing infront of the boss. sometimes 3 minutes if it's the last boss. always waste time until my buffs disappear.

these slow paced tanks are so annoying. and the ready check is annoying too.

I don't necessarily agree with ready checks being annoying but certainly standing in front of bosses for 30+ seconds doing nothing has always annoyed me in all MMO's and I just don't understand what they can be doing. Are they just timid? Unfortunately, tanking requires someone who is confident and can take charge and not everyone has that personality type.

Play a tank if you want to set the pace.

Really? Seems to me alot of the tanks in this game are in a huge rush for some reason.

You know what's annoying? Gun-jumping DPS getting themselves (and others) killed needlessly because they didn't take their Ritalin and can't sit still for 30 seconds.

Usually tanks who wait for a pull are waiting for something quite tangible, like healer MP, someone to catch up or watch their cutscene, or perhaps a personal CD (Fight or Flight or Berserk perhaps) about to come off cooldown so they'll have more damage/aggro.

There are definitely slowpokes out there but in endgame I usually find they have a reason for delays.

    As another poster said...

    1. Waiting for CDs
    2. Waiting for TP
    3. Waiting for healer MP

I don't mind the ready checks but as a NIN, it's more valuable for me to use my ninjutsu on Katon > Kassatsu > Doton on AoE pulls then to keep having to recast Huton, especially when I have a flank ability that extends Huton's timer with 280 potency

Why don't I play a tank myself to set the pace? I suffer from anxiety when I play a tank. I feel more stressed the usual being in that "leadership" position and I panic at small things

Tanks really only control the downtime pace.

Dps control the uptime pace because they're really the ones killing stuff.

Tanks aren't controlling how fast I kill stuff, just how fast they pull said stuff. I just don't like the downtime. Sometimes reasons are pretty legit, but a lot of the cooldown aren't really needed for dungeons.

Also, I never really understood why everyone assumes tanks have to be the leader. Anyone is capable of doing it honestly. Just because the tank's job is to take a beating doesn't mean they have to be the leader.

Edit: I actually find it more annoying when tanks pull when I'm not ready.

Tank here. I’ll tell you exactly why I wait before pulling the next pack, boss, or minboss.

I know you can’t see my TP if on WAR, but I use a lot of it getting AoE threat on all those mobs in a group, gathering them up for you to kill. And until level 58 when I get Equilibrium, there’s no way for me to restore it on my own besides waiting a few seconds before the next pull (and even then, I have to be in DPS stance to get a mere 200 TP back). If you want to help me out, give me Goad if on NIN or play a song between pulls on BRD.

Same deal with Dark Knight and MP. If Blood Price isn’t up and I’m not getting hit from multiple sources, it restores very slowly. I sometimes need to turn off Darkside and let the out of combat mana regen a few ticks before turning it on again. Because I certainly don’t want to pull the next pack while OoM and let the pack stampede over you or the healer.

Ok, 3 minutes I can understand, but you should reevaluate some priorities if a mere 30s before a boss pull is that annoying to you. There’s several reasons for me to wait:
    • Make sure everyone is over the blue line or close to it so no one is locked out of the fight. I’ve had it happen more often than I’d like that me or someone else pulls the boss, the blue wall comes up but someone else wasn’t paying attention or just too far away and then they can’t help at all. Running at 75% DPS efficiency for a fight, or wiping prematurely because your healer isn’t there, takes a LOT longer than just making sure everyone is present. Ready checks aren’t usually necessary as long as you can see everyone else’s character is moving around. I only do a ready check if someone has returned after an announced AFK in party chat.
    • Gives a chance for the healer to apply buffs (Protect, Stoneskin, Succor/Adlo, Card Draw, etc). If you have ever healed anything in this game you should know how annoying it is for a tank or DPS to go rocketing off at the start before you can even say hello or cast Protect.
    • In the cases where someone is new to a duty, gives me or someone else a small moment to quickly explain the vital mechanics of the fight to them. Again, wiping because not everyone is fully on board with the goal of the duty takes a lot longer than your precious 30s I spent increasing our chance of success.
    • One of the responsibilities/benefits of tanking is that YOU set the pace of the fight. And unfortunately, you can’t please everyone. What is too slow for a DPS may be too fast for the healer, or vice versa. Overall the tank needs to gauge the abilities of everyone else in the party, maximizing efficiency while preventing any death. If you’re that dissatisfied with how fast your dungeon experience is going, then I suggest you take up tanking for yourself.
