Paladin or dark knight as dps?

    Hi,
I'm still pretty new to this game, but I love it, except the fact that there is no
    sword class as a dd.
Therefore I'd like know, whether it is even possible to play a Paladin or a dark knight as a dd or rather which one of them makes more damage.

Oh boy. Ok first off their both tanks so please for the love of Azyma play them as such.

Second DRK has more damage than PLD but again for the love of Azyma play them as a tank.

Not as effectively as jobs intended to be damage dealers. That in turn means you should only attempt it with groups of friends who have agreed to such non-standard job choices. I've heard of some groups of friends who use all sorts of odd job combinations, and have a lot of fun with the challenge that presents. Just don't try it in DF or anywhere else you'll have a random group of strangers and just expect them to all go along with it.

(If you want an actual sword-wielding damage dealer, go Ninja. They may call their swords "daggers" but there are some huge ass daggers they use.)

As others have stated, DRK and PLD (along with PLD's class base GLA) are both tanks, so when you are in a party, you must tank, end of story. DRK is clearly and obviously the better hitter of the two, so if you want to do damage DRK is the better choice. However, DRK requires you to have levelled an earlier class/Job to at least level 50 first, and have played through the storyline to access Ishgard (and it should go without saying you must have the expansion pack Heavensward installed and registered first), so you will have a long time to go before you can gain that Job. So GLA/PLD is really your only choice at this time.

Having said that, when you are on your own, there is nothing stopping you running around as PLD in Sword Oath and equipping high STR gear to deal as much damage as you can. Even in parties many players like to boost STR with equipment so that attacks hit harder and thus increase hate when tanking. PLD sadly just isn't a hard hitter, as that's not what we excel at (it's damage mitigation and being able to take anything thrown at us without folding faster than Superman on laundry day ).

I'd highly recommend you give tanking a shot. It's actually a lot of fun, don't be afraid!

Sounds good. Rogue is actually a lot of fun.

You have to unlock it by becoming level 10 first and finishing the associated class-change quest. This allows you to go to other guilds and change classes at will (you don't lose any progress in any existing classes and can level all of them to max level if you're so inclined).

You will probably do this quest before you travel to Limsa Lominsa, but there have been cases where people have missed it. Just do all the quests coming out of the gladiator guild until you leave for the other cities.

Once in Limsa, look for this quest, Edelweiss Edelweiss, and just follow it through to the Rogue guild.

When you get to 50 and the Heavensward expansion, you can look in to Dark Knight if you still want to wield a massive sword. Just be aware you won't be playing as a dps all the time with the job.

Rogue is ok but Ninja once unlocked is better
Like others have said try tanks out, Warrior is actually very good and DK is super fun, still love my PLD though even if it has less damage.

While either can find themselves dpsing if an additional tank is not needed, neither of them are going to play as a DD. They are tanks that can push some DD but they are still just that, a tank
