Tanking while thinking about an ex is a really bad combination.

Had an Aurum Vale where the tank didn't have stance on for the first few pulls, but was letting stuff run amuck even with it on, then they basically ignored every untelegraphed mechanic at the bosses, meaning I had to heal through them having five stacks of the debuff in the first and third fights and them eating every single swipe/swing from the cyclops boss. I feel like there was a language barrier issue because they refused to use the fruits even after asking them multiple times, and they didn't make a peep throughout the entire run.

I was straining to keep everyone alive, so not getting a single commend at end felt like a particularly big slap in the face. I feel like some people just auto-commend the tank by reflex without actually thinking.

Commends are just as meaningful as any other fake internet points.

Should not take not getting commend as a slap in the face, since they mean absolutely nothing, and because of that I forget all about them most of the time. The fact you kept the group alive is cool though.

On a side note why do people like commends so much or view them as a marker of a good job? Am I missing something with regards to them. Or are they like reddit likes, some random internet points that mean not much of anything to those outside the medium.

It's basically what they're meant to be, a way to express "good job", even if they aren't often used that way.

There are a few achievements tied to them. The 1500 commendation one is now tied to getting certified as a combat mentor (and, oh boy, the number of meltdowns I've seen about the change from 300 to 1500 and complaints about how people will never be able to get that many because others are stingy with comms), the 3000 one earns you the Parade Chocobo. So there is some tangible "reward" to getting them beside warm-fuzzies... but still just internet points at the end of the day.

Had a GLA in copperbell say he was "new to tanking". But at the end of the run, admits his main job was DRG. We all agreed he lied, he's clearly tanked before, if he played DRG.
