Some tanks (not all) believe that they're immune to being kicked, since it would mean the party would have to wait X amount of time before one joins. If we wiped, the tank (who was a newbie!) would have been kicked and then replaced in a short amount of time.

Likely because when it's the healer being a diva, they usually threaten to not heal the target of their displeasure, as opposed to sulking in the corner like diva tanks do.

Given it's easy to get through a dungeon as a DPS without anyone healing you, diva healers don't typically end up trying to hold the run hostage. Neither do diva DPS, though they tend to be just as pointlessly salty as diva tanks are. More focused around berating so and so for being a 'noob' than anything though.

This is one of the reasons why you can't mentor in FFXIV - not the way it should be, anyway. It's not like you can report the guy, even though he's purposely potentially screwing you over if other tanks decide to leave immediately (which did happen until we finally got one that stayed). All this person cared about is, I guess, the feeling of being bullied because other players were too nice to stop and telling them they aren't performing their job previously, potentially running into the same situation we did. An overly sensitive player being told they aren't doing what they need to be doing, being called out on it and then dealing with a tantrum.

And yes, the tank said that and left immediately; so fast that they were gone before the "just helping" got sent.
People hate being corrected more than anything, everything you say they're doing wrong is a personal attack against them and they'll hate you forever for insinuating they could ever be bad. I've decided to just be blunt in these situation, because all i ever get back is salt when i try to be nice.

The best way to do things is to not beat around the bush, because it's almost impossible to convey sincerity without sounding condescending at the same time. "Tank can you use sword oath since you don't have shield oath yet, and since dps are getting aggro try using two flashes, thanks"

They'll never react well, but being impersonal as you possibly can helps.

I've tried it all. You can be smiley face sweet as the sweetest sugar and still only get salt thrown back at you. It's sad...since I actually like to help people.

Like JunseiKei said its hard to be what "mentor" is supposed to be in FFXIV because of this :/

At least the tank in their story didn't throw out insults...that's usually what I get lol

Here is a feel good Mentor story though the rare time I was appreciated fully for helping out every way I could.

I got Qarn Normal the level 34 one as tank with 3 new players with me. I explained everything they needed to know about the dungeon like killing bees first, the boss mechanics, killing the heads on the squares, helping out the healer letting him know to make sure to do his WHM quest when he gets out to get Regen (he didn't have it even though he was 35) so I let him know it makes healing easier and is awesome and he thanked me.

Run was kinda slow since all 3 were new but it was a great run, they were all really nice and had fun it seems. That's how mentoring is supposed to go people being receptive and nice and at least a bit appreciative for the assistance. They actually all 3 commended me too which was a nice gift I was happy to receive from this kind group of new players.

Wow. I just had the first legitimately bad experience in DF I'd ever had, and that's probably a HUGE deal considering I've been running DF stuff without premades near religiously for the past year and a half.

I queue for 60 roulette as a WHM, and end up in Neverreap. At least it's not ARF (where I've been cursed to get nothing BUT that dungeon for the ENTIRE PAST WEEK prior). Tank is a DRK, and there's a MNK that is slightly new (I say slightly because he didn't have capped gear but he had clearly done the dungeon before too) and a fellow mentor Machinist. Okay, easy, I think.

We burn through the first few pulls, with me doing my usual regen/asylum and going to town with Holy/Aero III/Assize spam. No problem. Then as soon as we reach the first boss, the tank starts throwing a fit at me out of nowhere ('If you're gonna Holy while I use Blood Price, I'm gonna drop stance so you're gonna be busy healing'). I just shrug through the boss fight as my usual self, until the machinist speaks up to defend me by suggesting he could 'adapt and use Carve and Spit instead of whining to the WHM' (which he didn't really have to do, that just made things more complicated). The tank's retort? A lot of awkward 'are you my mom' responses. Once the boss dies though, I just go, 'Not a big deal, I'll just work with that, I'm a flexible person and Holy spam being my only decent group DPS is pretty stupid anyway, just be prepared to have the run go a bit slower'.

Indeed, I spend the next portion of the run waiting for him to pop Blood Price before attacking, but things did get much slower to the point where I was actually afraid when he pulled all of the wespes at once, because if I'm not allowed to attack, chances were VERY high that the Storm of Final Stings would go off and nuke him into dust, so I spend an absurd amount of time just constantly topping off his HP. Except they (and his Blood Price, for that matter, which is why it took me so long to switch into the offensive into the first place) never actually came, as I waited for about 20 seconds after the Treant died watching for one to even start casting Final Sting (or for him to even use Blood Price) when I realized ALL of the wespes were at half HP, they haven't been stunned yet, and I had enough firepower to just end them. Of course, the tank doesn't notice, and continues bickering with the Machinist afterwards, even to the point of initiating a vote kick on him for 'harassment', saying that 'it's either him or me'. Of course, we block the vote kick attempt, and he decides to try to punish us by dropping his tank stance for the next pull before the second boss, leaving me to tank the pull instead. Of course, I have MASS REGEN POWER on my side, and charge through that pull like nothing.

I tell the tank 'seriously, trying to sabotage a run over something that isn't even that big of a deal is just sad, but keep going if you want, as I can shoulder the burden myself', to which the machinist thought I was actually referring to him instead, which I like to think REALLY ticked off the tank (he dropped his tank stance and the other two didn't even -notice-, which likely made it blatantly clear that I was the one that was going to control the pace of the run, not him).

I think after then does he realize I'm completely prepared for whatever BS he had in mind for me, and that attempting to screw with the rest of us further would only make HIM look bad, especially considering I never really tried to insult him until he tried to vote kick the machinist, compared to the tank spouting dumb crap for most of the run (of which by that point, I had no idea who he was even trying to talk to in the first place). Indeed, after the second boss, he completely shuts up and goes back to playing like any normal tank, and I decided I'd just attack as usual, just replacing Holy spam with Blizzard II spam every time I actually saw him turn on Blood Price. With my efforts combined with the two DPS, the mobs still melted anyway.

(Fun fact: If the tank actually left, it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. I've actually successfully tanked that portion of the dungeon and the end boss as a healer without a tank before. And of course I was watching his Blood Price usage - his MP never even dropped below 15% throughout the entire run anyway, and he always popped it when he was still above 75% for god knows what reason.)

To be honest, that tank is extremely lucky that I'm a practical person and that quite frankly, I was hoping to make him less toxic by seeing how I adapt around him. I now realize I probably just pissed him off even further by the end, because I'd pretty much clearly demonstrated that he didn't have the mentality of an actual good player, for my performance completely outshined his, I complied anyway, and I didn't care enough to indulge him in the war of words despite that.

Bonus: I decided to actually compile everything that was said during the run. Blue = Tank, Red = Machinist, Orange = Monk.

Yeah, if you're scratching your head by the second half, don't worry. I had no idea who the tank was even talking to by that point either. And no, that final line said by the tank at the very end of the run wasn't a mistake.

Shout out to the guys I just ran Gubal (HM) with - on my WHM. It was great fun, and while it was unfortunate that the tank DC'd during the first fight, the NIN was easy enough to heal through the rest of the fight. Seriously wish I could have given you all comms (ultimately, chose the NIN because of his tanking during that DC, constant goad on the tank and smoke screen on me).

Hope I run into you all again.

Xelphatol. Expert roulette as a blm.

asked by the other dps why I use quelling strikes all the time......

    LOL!

yup we live in a world where dps is measured by how high you are on the enmity chart. and thus using quelling strikes is a dps loss....
