I haven't done DF for two days now because my anxiety has kicked in. I seriously hope these type of mentors aren't a majority and that I can find one willing to actually help a sprout.
There are plenty of people who aren't mentors, willing to help sprouts. Just be willing to listen and learn. As for the people who refuse to explain anything and then complain, you can sit back and laugh at them.

Also, the reddit thread you're reading must be super-old, because the level 50 relic quest is, nowadays, nothing more than an unbelieveable waste of your time, money, and energy, and will only give you an extremely outdated weapon. The only reason to really do it would be for glamour purposes, but if you don't care about that, don't waste your efforts on it.

Was trying to do everything else before I did Heavensward. But okay, I'll skip it.

To be fair, Chimera and Hydra are needed to unlock trial roulette anyway.

Go into WC without my FC for the first time. (Early morning, no one is on).

Guess I should start with this: Alliance B's tank is a first timer. And still a green leaf. Gear is all 220.

I'm in Alliance A. Tank does not pull the correct gator (the very first mob). DPS begin getting clobbered. So DPS switch to another team's gator while ours is getting mostly ignored. Excellent start.
At the 2nd gators, Alliance B's tank begins attacking our gator, so now B's is getting clobbered. This continued with all of the non-boss mobs.

I think B's tank had only done Void Ark once before coming to Weeping City, because they didn't seem to know a lot of things. Like B's tank begins pulls. So before every boss we were all just waiting around for B's tank to pull.
At Ozma, our tank was standing right in the middle of the platform, making the square phase extremely tough for the healers.
Our tank also forgot to pick up Ozma adds several times.

No one in Alliance C stood on the circle to enable us to hit the mob in the Black Hole phase for about 1 minute.
    So that sucked.

After the Black Hole phase, Alliance B promptly bit the dust, followed by C. As soon as the Limit Break hit 3, all of the meteors came we wiped. Weren't even close to winning anyway.

The 2nd time was similar, but our tank got the adds after my co-healer scolded him. He also finally stood off to the side.
As the Assimilation phase, several people became rocks. We barely cleared that phase.

At the final boss, B's tank kept turning the boss right before she cast "haircut" leading to many deaths. Thankfully I realized this quickly so I ran as far to the left / right as possible to avoid dying. Co-healer did too. (He was great.)

Thankfully, very few people on our Alliance died, but B and C were having a very tough time. Amazingly, we managed to clear the final boss on the first attempt.

And the gear I was aiming for didn't drop.

I did it because it made the first step of getting Anima weapon easier AND you get an achievement and title for completing it.
Plus, the story is kind of interesting.

Ah, so there is a reason to still do this. Thank you! Will try to power through and finish what I started.

Dont be dishearted by other ppl. Like in real world, in gaming you will find idiots but you will also find genuine ppl willing to help. Just focus in the positive and ignore the others.
As for the relic, well i did like you, i started playing this game only this past january, and i did everything before heavensward, and i did enjoy it. It is true that the level 50 relic is obsolete at the moment, but i still did it also, i find the glamour pretty with zenith. At the moment i did finally finished all the ponies including nightmare and kirin and im starting to focus on the birds now. There are plenty of webistes that offer guidance often game like ffxiv wiki for example. Just play the game the way you want to play and have fun.

Keep in mind that the remainder of the relic quest not only requires you to run through a ton of FATEs, monsters, dungeons, etc, it also requires you to spend a lot of gil on getting mats that can only be obtained by high-level desynthesis, and desynth skills are a huge sink to raise. Not to mention, you need mats and items crafted by evey last one of the 8 crafter classes, and the items are all 3-star level 50. There's also the materia melding stage, where you're going to sink thousands upon thousands of tomestones, not to mention getting the materia itself.

So yeah, the story is interesting, the achievement and title may be nice, but I didn't find it worthwhile to continue with it. As for the way it leads into the HW relic quest, you have to spend all that time and effort and money for the ARR relic quest, only to skip one step in the HW relic quest... not worth it for me, but that's my opinion.

That's all true. It does take a lot of time and money to get the final weapon and complete the quest.

Personally, I find raising desynthesis to be a very lucrative, albeit expensive and frustrating process. It is now very easy for me to get 10+ FC III Demimateria and 15 glass fibers a day with desynthesis. Not to mention FC II and BC II materia, which are (at least on Carbuncle) selling for a lot.

However, the desynthing and crafting part can be completed extremely quickly simply by asking someone in an LS or FC to help you out.
The materia melding stage (Alexandrite) does take a while, but thankfully there are many ways to get it. Allied seals from doing hunts is an excellent way. Tomestones of Poetics are easy to get as well. Plus there is the daily quest for the map which gives 5 Alexandrite (I believe).

Also, the "gather light" stage of the weapon has been nerfed significantly.
You can now get, I believe, 200 light by simply running any dungeon. In other words, you can run Sastasha, solo, on an undersized party several times and you're done with that stage.

The most annoying part for me was waiting for the necessary FATES to pop up.

In the end, I was glad I did it for the experience, if anything.
