    Roleplay questions

Just two quick questions for any of you roleplayers out there.

    1. What behaviors do people do that get under your skin?
    2. What behaviors are common in RP environments?

EDIT: Thank you all for the replies. I have two other questions now, if you all don't mind my asking them.

    1. What IN CHARACTER behaviors do people do that get under your skin? (it can be in character or out of character)

    2. What IN CHARACTER behaviors are common in RP environments/situations?

This opinion is from a person who has RP on MUD, tried RP on WoW

    1) People who use rp as an excuse to act like a rude person, people who are mary sue/gary stu who come up with overly used backstories, those who make up backstories that have 0 sence in the lore of the game such as " i'm a orphen 1/2 dragon 1/2 vampire who was the bastard son/daughter of a noble, whos family was killed infron of me", and those who ERP.

    3) the type of behaviors i just listed was commen in WoW, most people just sat in taverns and would play their character in conversations only.

Another thing people do is come up with short one time story like plays they rp out with friends

addition: I'm more used to MUD style rp, as its mostly organic. You just simply come up with a personality, a basic backstory and get into the mind of the character your playing, and just play out your character Id love to rp on ff14, but the style I'm used to isn't really done. (from my experience on WoW) And the 2 "rp" servers on ff14 are blocked from character creation.

A big no-no with the kind of role playing you're likely to find in FFXIV is trying to control things beyond your character. For example, say you're RPing a tavern brawl and want to pick up a chair and hit me over the head with it. If you make an emote for it that says "Mercer Vaghn knocks Doranoux unconscious with the nearest chair!" you're taking control of my character away from me. You already decided that the chair hits my character and what the effects of that are, without any input from me.

A better way to RP that scene would be an emote like "Mercer Vaghn swings the nearest chair at Doranoux!" You're still performing the same act, but now you're only controlling what your character is doing (the chair swinging) and not what my character is doing (getting hit by the chair...possibly). That leaves things open for me. I could follow that up by saying "OUCH! What the hell man?!" or I can emote "Doranoux narrowly avoids the chair, but trips drunkenly onto his face."

In short, its no fun to role play with someone who is in god mode and is trying to control things beyond what they actually have control over.

1: Honestly, the only thing that tends to get under my skin is people giving themselves a backstory that basically says "I'm better than you." People who claim to be nobles, the one true warrior of light, the aforementioned half dragon/half vampire halfbreed nonsense, male seekers of the sun who use the surname Nuhn...

2: Most of my RP experience is seeing people in taverns, but I notice a lot of folks sharing what they've been up to since they last met over a flagon of ale. I also occasionally see people stopping to rest at camps in the middle of their adventure. It definitely seems to me that, at least the stuff in /say, mainly involves adventurers doing stuff in their downtime.

    1. Overly complicated backstory. Keep it simple! Less is more interesting, in my opinion.
    2. What I hear on the grapevine is that people tend to be exclusive and discouraging for new rpers. Which is unfortunate for the newbies that want to feel like they're part of a community vs those who prefer to RP with 1-3 people at most. Best thing to do is head to an inn or tavern, where people are more likely to interact on the fly.

A quick comment though a bit off topic, but still pertains to rp

Roleplaying can be as simple or as complex as you want, but keep it open ended to let other join in and opt out at a moments notice.
Rp can be/ is anything your character does, not just talk.
    Examples:

You can be a waitress at any tavern in the game, you can buy food to trade to other players for a fee. You can even go as far to run your own by having a player who cooks cook up the food, and having gather'ers farm the ingreadents.
And with the way our housing is we could build our own taverns/shops to run if we so choose.

Rp isn't limited to just that, you could rp dungeons out by simply doing some basic emoting such as "wipes brow after the long battle" or "congradulates team for a good job"

Personally id like rp taken out of the in and spread world wide. But again that just me and my MUD experience.

What behaviors do people do that get under your skin?

A couple major things that get under my skin, that ultimately drove me away from WoW's RP (and WoW in general) are people who suddenly can't RP with you because you're not doing things their way, or they have to go out of character to chide you about what you said in-character -- something they easily could have done in-character. Also, people who take RP romance WAAAAY too seriously. My God, those people... I needn't go into explanation.

What behaviors are common in RP environments?

I'd say the most common behaviors in RP environments are Lone Wolf-ism, Oddball-ism, and Romance-ism (not Romanticism~♪ that's different!). If you see someone, they're either playing McBadass by the bar counter (if you're in a bar), suckin' down those whiskies and oggling the women. Or, they're yukking it up with their little friends, and doing all-around goofy things, such as acting like children trapped in adult bodies. Or, and this is probably the most common, they're talking to their lover.

All I remember about RP behavior is "Ice Mage"... (Based on someone's story)
