ESRB ratings do not equal Terms of Service regarding online interactions that do not fall within the purview of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The game itself may be "for players aged 13 and older" (as per the Child Online Protection Act, or COPA), but can be rated "Teen" on the cover by the ESRB alone.

If you see things happening in a public channel that should not be, report it. Cite the ToS then if you need to, but do not confuse it with an industry-mandated rating.

Addendum: I'm certainly not innocent of dropping the occasional f-bomb- especially when pissed- but I never go full XXX in Shout. IDGAS about your Blacklist, "bra", bring it on.

I think complicated backstories are fine as long as they're plausible, the problem is complicated backstories you immediately over-share with people you just met. RPing is a kind of creative writing and like with other forms of writing it's not a bad thing if you know about your character in mind-bleeding detail but it's also not a good thing if you info-dump this all on your audience, ie other RPers.

I find the consistent denial in claiming erotic role-playing is not role-playing much more amusing, though yes, two consenting adults engaging in such things is not a new or foreign concept and happens more frequently than people are willing to admit.

"If you". Yes, that is the crucial point.

Simply put, the difference between cybersex and erotic roleplaying is that cybersex is two people pretending to have sex with each other over the Internet. Erotic roleplaying is two people role-playing ("pretending") that their characters have sex with each other. Very important distinction.

If it is ERP "you" are not having sex, your character is. The gender, appearance, etc. of the player behind the other character are irrelevant - after all neither you nor your character are pretending to have sex with them.


While cybersex is generally done in order to receive some kind of sexual pleasure from it, ERP does not need to involve that at all.

Being involved in ERP does not mean that "you" have sex any more than having your character cut down untold number of foes on the screen make "you" a killer.

SE has a disclaimer stating that online interactions are not rated by the ESRB. Not that you should use this as an excuse to act poorly or make people uncomfortable, but that disclaimer DOES prevent players from being banned for participating in mature content. See the attached image if you need proof.
