Hey just because it's a common FF theme doesn't mean it's not inspired by Norse mythology.

Even (referencing another thread in this forum right now) the idea of Zodiark which was in past FFS a serpent and Hydaelyn being a mother world goddess is similar to Jormungandr the serpent surrounding the Earth in Norse mythology.

    1. The allagans have a liitle tips of both mix, romans and egypts.
Yeah, agreed. The Allagans remind me of a sort of advanced Roman/Hellenic culture. The warring triad loosely reminds me of Hecate the Greek god, and there's even the rubble of a cathedral in Azys Lla. We have to fight a minotaur, and a shapeshifting robot (common theme in the Latin world, Ovid etc.). Throw in that fight with the sphinx faced curator before unlocking Alexander and you've got some very strong Roman/Hellenic references.

It's all just references to previous canon lore.

As for the Greek reference with Allag, there's a lot of parallels but I'm inclined to believe it's more like SE is drawing from the histories and myths of fallen civilizations in general. True, the Greek and Roman civilization fell particularly hard, going from mechanized wonders (bronze and porcelain automatons like those in Rhodes) and analogue computers (antikythera device used to calculate sea navigation) to villages and individual kingdoms in two centuries. So it's easy to make that comparison. But Allag also draws heavily Mesopotamia and Babylon with the Tower of Babel/Crystal Spire, and Gilgamesh for King Xande.

Generally, most of the references are too shallow or too diluted with other civilization's lore to really feel like a single civilization was intended to stand out in particular.

This doesn't particularly relate to Allagan, but I thought it was interesting the dragoon ability Geirskogul was also Norse in origin. Even more surprised that our relic weapon, Longinus, is named after the spear (or the guy that used the spear) that pierced Jesus on the cross.

So, I'm more inclined to believe the lore in general draws from all kinds historical references, and that coincidences are intentional.

Gae Bolg is also German (I think?) for Dragon's Bone.

Nope, Gae Bolg was Cu Cuchlainn's weapon in Irish mythology.

I know what the Gae Bolg is but I'm thinking the word it's self is Anglo-Saxon in origin.

I'm not sure though, hang on. <Conults Mythology Encyclopedia>

    Edit: <Returns 5 Minutes later>

OK, Gae Bulg is a Celtic word meaning "Spear of Mortal Pain", " Spear of Death", or when literally translated "Belly Spear" and was Schathach's gift to Cu Cuchaliann before his battle with her sister Aofie of The Shadows.

Don't know where I got Dragon Bone form then.
