I'll admit that part of the problem for me right now is my laptop is out of service and I'm playing on a PS3. I'm sure when I get back to PC gaming it'll be easier, but for now a large part is me still getting used to the lengthy switch of skillbars, and occasionally having a brain fart moment and forgetting what button to press to highlight my CS. (Yes I'm aware that's stupid, but I had a major brain fart tonight.)

I had a horrible run of Haukke Manor earlier this evening where I went OOM and a DPS died (didn't have Hi-Ether on bar) and while I kept everyone else alive I majorly panicked, then at the end of the dungeon the other DPS and Tank used emotes to disapprove before entering the portal immediately. I'm not gonna lie, this is a game, and this is the internet where people can say what they want without repercussion, but it was really really disheartening to see someone give me a questioning look, and a disapproving look, especially as a newbie still learning.

All this is perfectly understandable. Just take your time to learn to play the job, one thing at a time. Healing abilities first, and then add some DPS in the mix (you can start without Cleric Stance first too!) when you're comfortable. At higher level you'll want to practice micro managing your fairy, too. But no one should expect you to handle all of this perfectly from the start, that's what the leveling dungeons are for: learning.

Try not to get discouraged by strangers and if possible, try to find yourself a nice Free Company where people can join you for your first runs in new dungeons.

    tldr;

If you enjoy playing the game with healing only go ahead an do so. But be aware that at some point in the future you will start to dps or get bored because the tanks only need minor care if played well in dungeons or get frustrated in highend raids because healer dps saves a lot of wipes. If you dont care about those facts you will get along quite well but you will be flamed from time to time because most healers do help outside of their role.
The way the healer damage is constructed in FF14 (Large chunks are dealt by dots) it is definitly intended. If you want to dip in damage just try to swap to CS Dot one mob and switch out. That way you cant mess up the stancedance untill familiar. But don´t let People force you into damage if you feel you cant keep them up otherwise. Tell them they are too squishy or you would be willing to help if they start avoiding every third voidzone. Makes them think outside the MOARDPS-rooster. Even good healers cant dps if the group lacks skill.

I've never seen an MMO where healers weren't expected to use the abilities that are given to them. Not sure what game you came from, but healers DPSing isn't a new thing, and you're never going to excel at your class unless you can get the hang of it.

Of course, as stated, it is fine to take things slow and learn things one step at a time. But healers, ESPECIALLY scholar, are capable of doing a lot of damage to help their group. Not taking advantage of it (once you are comfortable doing so) is just outright silly.

    You're being lazy.

It will annoy me. It's the same as if the tank spams overpower until he has threat and then just goes AFK for half the pull. Or the summoner spreads dots and then just idles, because it's 'a dot job'. Or if you're playing an archer rather than a bard because 'it's my character concept'. Dungeons are easy enough that everyone can do this, but it's terribly dysfunctional.

Now, it's your game and your sub and your money. That it annoys me doesn't give me the right to do anything about it to you. But maybe playing a team-based game while not putting in a team effort is the wrong mentality to bring into things.
    A very good post here.

Actuslly, healers discouraged from dps'ing has been very much a case in games where healers damage spells are not very efficient comparing to the mana cost they have due stat distribution, while mana and regeneration of it is a thing. Healers simply had to spare any drop of that blue juice to heal efficiently, and they could still mess it up. Hear this is different nowadays, in wow at least, they dumbed it down enough that one simply can't run OOM. This game has cleric stance which gives the healer damage spells the same usability as most caster classes so benefits are reasonable compared to the cost.

Oh, for the OP about the OOM. On scholar, Aetherflow is a delicious thing. And that gives you stacks which allows you to cast a manadrain to whatever mob is around for even more juice. They say SCH is mana dynamo ^^

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

You can heal 98% of the content in this game one handed, while eating a sandwich, watching a movie and chatting to some friends. Healer DPS simply gives you something to make it less trivial and more interesting, and it pushes you.

    • Healers are the hardest role in the game.
    • Our DPS is 70% of a true damage dealing class.*
    • As healing gets easier later on, you'll find yourself with free time.
    • You are not required to dps, but you are expected to.**
    • You will never be Janna from League of Legends, you will never be a Cleric from D&D, you will never be a White Mage from earlier titles.
    • As a WHM in FFXIV you will have the strongest Area of Effect Damage in the game.***
    • Muscle Memory is the hardest thing to master.
    • Don't give up on XIV until you've reached the end of the story!

*At item level 190 average dps was 1,000 - 1,200 - Healer dps was 750-800 single target. Damage per second over a 3-5 minute period.
**Scholars are required to deal roughly 30% of a true DPS' damage in end-game raid content. White Mages solo-heal.
***Holy, Aero III, Assize is the strongest burst combination any character role can deal, this is a fact. Though unsustainable due to MP.

no, not really. but first i have to say a regen heals less than the fairy and ticks only every 3 seconds, while the fairy has a 2,5 sec gcd.

the reasons scholar dps more is that they have enough mana for dpsing. on my whm i'm oom before the fight ends when i'm dpsing in a 10 min fight.
scholar also have more dps abilitys which don't require accuracy.
but the biggest reason is the fairy: a whm can heal as much as a sch + fairy. a whm + fairy can heal even more. the "solo" healing whm is in fact a whm + fairy.

I bet most groups you get for dungeons are made up of you, who is at the level range of the dungeon, and three players who are synced down level 50+.
If this is the case you'll waste more mp just healing them in their higher level armor than a normal level 30 something. So I'd just stick with the heals.
I strongly suggest typing in chat
'New to this game and this dungeon' Most tanks will be kind enough to not speed run if they see you're new.

Oh and get THM to 26 for SWIFTCAST asap. That definitely is needed for healers.

Just DPS if you have time. Don't worry about it.
