I'll be SUPER happy when SE balances their game so that classes focus more on their own roles rather than how much DPS they can pull while doing their roles (I don't want to DPS either, OP).

But until that crazy healing day comes, DPS'ing as a healer is the optimal way to play, so that's what I'm gonna do.

Tempted to go back to WoW because of it, though (Disc/Mistweaver did the dps/heal thing better than SE. Even Resto Shaman's lightning bolt MP restore is less annoying). I like trinity games. Having to DPS so much while healing makes it feel... idk... more like a non-trinity game.

I always heal and almost never play dps roles. Went to the FF with a same mindset as a OP. Why would I want to dps, it's not my role etc. But when I started playing I realized that it's So much more FUN to heal and dps (and see how tank is mad because not 100% health all the time ). If you just dully heal all the time dungeons just become boring now. But when you dps... You put hots on a tank and start playing Cleric stance, make disco with holy and assize, putting dots and spamming rocks! That feeling when you run in in a big pulled group and start spamming holy is so precious I now really can't imagine myself just healing (unless it's some healing intensive encounter). As a whm I could probably go with just healing but it's slower, boring and not challenging at all, I think people pick the healer role to feel more challenged than your generic dps role. If dps is bad there is always a second one and if they are good props to them for making their role challenging. But this game is made so that if you just heal you feel like you're NOT accomplished. This is strange but it's how it is.

If they upped healing requirements across the board to enforce a greater focus on casting heals and managing MP (largely precluding DPS), we'd probably see even fewer players regularly playing healers, so I doubt SE would take this route.

The good healers are already keeping themselves busy by weaving DPS.

The mediocre healers have their hands full as it is or refuse to step up. They're likely to complain if healing becomes demanding enough to affect the play style of the upper skill tier.

The bad healers struggle to meet minimum requirements and won't be able to hang at all unless they experience some epiphany that helps them realize what they're doing wrong and how to fix it (if they aren't bad because of sheer apathy).

I'd also like to add in that I'm dealing with a lot of, "Why are you standing in that...Okay move...I need you to move...okay, never mind, it's cool."

What do you mean? Are you standing in things or you have those thoughts? If latter then it's a thought pretty much every healer has when you see that derpy tank/dps won't move from a mechanic/aoe. If former, then just move... Generally its very good to Google mechanics of dungeons or trials that you're going in. And if you're afraid of (mostly minor) spoilers in a format of bosses names then just tell people you're new and would like a brief description, generally people won't rant (although there are exceptions unfortunately).

The derpy DPS, even though unlike WoW it's painfully obvious where it's going to hit, yet still they stand there.

I've actually been googling, I was told by a friend that Titan was beyond hard so I Youtubed that, and I'm not anywhere near Geruda yet but I just Youtubed her. I also did the same for Cutter's cry because Chimera.

The key to FFXIV boss encounters is to learn the scripting. They are all designed to be completed by pretty much anyone who can follow the patterns. Bosses have very static rotations with few variables (usually who gets hit with what, but even that is often limited by role or position on the enmity list). Titan is a textbook example of this in that players who don't learn the fight and attempt to wing it tend to end up tanking the floor early on.

Ask a veteran player about Titan (all versions), and you'll usually get "Oh, that's so easy." Ask someone attempting Titan for the first time, and you'll frequently get "What kind of shit was that?!" The difference is almost entirely in knowing the steps to the dance, which coincidentally is a huge factor in how healers manage to keep people healthy while pushing DPS along.

About your Titan example, I think it's an over hyped boss fight aside from it's extreme mode. As a new player Titan normal mode was the easiest primal/party related thing I've done up to that point. I still remember my first Titan group, I said my gf and I were new to the fight. The other dps and tank insisted we'll wipe a million times because of the fact. My gf and I ended up not getting hit once aside from his unavoidable aoe dmg.

Titan hard mode was easy as well esp since by the time you get to that point in the game you should already know how to dodge and play the game well enough to dodge his obvious telegraphs.

Titan Extreme mode on the other hand was quite difficult and is the only mode where you actually have to "dance". It's such an unfair balance compared to the other extreme primals and I believe this mode is the reason why this boss gets over hyped so much for it's difficulty.

Well, all I can say is it gets better on higher levels. People actually start to pay attention to circles on the ground because they hurt a lot your life won't be easier tho lol. Above mentioned dps and overall healing intensifies. But it's fun)

You don't have to unless you want to in most situations. In other situations (if you're into hardcore raid progression) your raid leader will probably ask you to lend dps whenever possible.

I never usually dps until i'm familiar with a place, so i can know approximately how much damage a tank will take, and how much i can afford to DPS before the tank starts to die.

Also, it eventually becomes extremely boring to just stand there while everyone else is doing stuff sometimes. So it's just something to do most of the time.

Never try to do it when you really shouldn't (MP issues/healing intensive fights/etc...)
