The PS3 only has 256Mb of VRAM and 256 Mb of system RAM. That's 512Mb of RAM in total. This limits how much information can be stored on your system. This means that the devs to have to work with the understanding that they only have 512Mb of RAM to take into consideration when creating content such as zones that load whenever you load into a new area, how many player characters can be displayed on screen at once, how many polygons can make up mobs, environments, etc. how many textures can be displayed, etc. Basically, any information that the game will need to be able to access whenever you're in an area, your PS3 will have to have the information stored in the RAM. The less RAM you have, the less that can be stored. This holds back the game due to the devs having to make sure that the game will be compatible with PS3 and having to design the game around the limitations of the PS3.
