What would make you feel connected to your character?

From my post of "why you stopped playing ffxiv", i saw a few people comment on how they don't feel connected to their characters at all. And i haven't seen that brought up too much by the DEVs, and aside from barber shop and moghouse threads there hasn't been much i've seen.

So simply put, what would make you guys feel more connected with your character and the world?

I'll admit that the game feels a little detached at times. I'm really missing a place to call my own like a mog house. A place i can customize or just go to have my character chill. Having my character own space, having his own stash of items. It just made a sort of connection with me. But i think its more than that.

Even with the story, and the game play it all feels detached and i'm not sure exactly why.

    What do you guys think?

If death was meaningful like in XI my character progress would feel like a result of my playing skill rather than an embarrassing reminder of how many times I've played through that leve-thing.

If I had a choice that physically represented me.

So far none do. Elvaan did in XI, but in XIV the females are now dainty flowers and not buff muscular amazonian momma bears.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

A world that's fun to explore. If I don't feel like I'm having an adventure then what's the point? There's just no connection.

What? The women look way more womanly in this game than they did in XI.

In XI the Mithra all had broad man shoulders. Elvaan women looked like they could beat the snot out of their male counterparts.

Besides, why on earth would you want your character here to look like you in real life? The whole point is to remove yourself from reality. That's why I play as a tiny female midget when in reality I'm a 6-foot-2 240lb lummox.

I'm honestly curious, are you a buff muscular amazionian momma bear?

This is probably not the game's fault, but I start feeling detached when there no chatter going on.

Being more active in cutscenes would help for me. I like to feel like my character is a part of the story, and is actually helping the cause. Sure, the actions played out through actual game content portray that, but cutscenes (Especially FFXIV's voiced over/pre-rendered scenes) really have a way of drawing you deeper into the story as everything unfolds. So far, it seems like your character usually just stands around doing a whole lot of nothing. I'm not asking they're voiced, as I like the silent protagonist.

I'd like to see my character actually get up and doing something. Fight, come to the aid of others, be a damn hero. I play a Gladiator, so I see my character as some one who would do everything he could to keep others out of harms way. Instead, he stands around like a chicken with his head cut off.
