Why Odin was my favorite Primal fight

I loved fighting Odin. After an unsuccessful FC attempt at Ravana EX last night, I found myself wishing more fights could be like Odin.

I loved Odin because it felt like a test of my overall abilities as a player, not a test of how well the entire group had memorized the fight.

All the mechanics of the fight were straight forward without an artificial learning curve. DPS had to kill the adds. Tanks could see the tank buster on a cast bar and mitigate instead of having to memorize a rotation. AOEs had markers on the ground so you knew where not to stand. People took plenty of damage that needed to be healed. If people screwed up, they took more damage but didn't necessarily die outright. If some players were not skilled enough or made mistakes, other players (especially the healers) could pick up the slack.

In contrast, Ravana has a huge learning curve of new things specific to that one fight. It doesn't matter how good of a player you are: if you don't know where to stand and how to handle each mechanic, people die and the party wipes. When people screw up a mechanic, they take enough damage to die outright, so healers are helpless and there is no margin for error.

I know that is par for the course for Ex primals and raids (although Bismarck Ex wasn't so bad). If anyone from SE is listening, you guys did a great job with Odin and I would love to see future content that is more like Odin in the ways I described.

I agree, there's a nice change of pace when a fight is about personally working to your extent rather than teamwork requiring work towards synergy.
Both are great styles of fights but sometimes I just need to zone out and not worry about where everyone is and what everyone is doing for once, and only worry about myself.

The Odin trial was closer to hard mode primals in difficulty I believe so thats why there was no learning required really, nor was the punishment for players making a mistake as severe

We didn't seem to get any hard modes this time around, it was either story modes or extremes although the extremes aren't exactly difficult, in Ravana once you do get used to her rotation of moves it becomes quite easy

I appreciate having both styles of fights in this game.

Story mode versions are the "hard" mode versions (see the last 5 primals). That being said, it's obviously a misnomer to label something as a "hard" mode when there is no "normal" or "easy" mode. If there are 2 difficulties, then the lesser is "normal" (or unmarked, like alexander).

That being said, it looks like you are looking for a boss that is tank and spank, which we have plenty of leveling bosses (including story mode primals which seem to be what you are looking for). If a fight mechanic can't kill players, then they ignore it, which means there is no point of adding it. You can blame your fellow players as to the reason fight mechanics kill you if you don't handle them. Of course, you can still do the "hard" versions of the primal fights since that's basically what you are looking for. Odin falls in this line too (you can't have an "extreme" mode version if a fight without a "normal" version...).

I actually found Odin to be a kinda boring fight on its own merit, but it wasn't too bad and still generated enough interest for me to run it even tho all it offered was glamour gear. Being honest though, I liked Garuda/Ifrit/Bismarck ex and Ultima the best so far. I think that's more do to the overall feel of those fights tho. I'm not a huge fan of the no warning tank busters, but I forgive them since I wouldn't normally get my hp bar emptied out by it ( well, sometimes ifrit would throw out incinerate, like, one after the other).

And speaking of tank busters, I hated Odin's; it came up too often for how much damage it would do. As warrior it was no problem; I'd have inner beast and change for every one of them (because, seriously, inner beast is pretty much the best defensive cooldown you could ever really ask for), but on pld, I'd always have to eat one or 2 or maybe 3 with pretty much nothing ( except the poverty stoneskin I'd cast on myself because I know how painful it is to heal tanks that use absolutely no defense cd's).
