A good way to fine tune your DPS

I have decided to start working on my BLM Zodiac weapon for glamour recently, but I was having trouble queuing for the required dungeons for the animus books.

After a while I got with my ninja buddy and asked if he would run one unsynced with me to see how we fair. We did Lost City of Amdapor and while it isn't exactly difficult, especially unsynced, it made me realize something.

Soloing or duoing older dungeons unsynced as purely DPS is a really good way to force yourself into learning how to play your class well. I mean on top of doing the proper research for your class of course. XD

Eh, I am okay with parsers personally. I don't use them as I am on PS4, but I like the idea of knowing my exact numbers. There are many other ways to "git Good" with out them though. XD

The way I forced myself to learn is by having my brother, a completely reckless tank, and a very poor healer with no mp management join me in a trial. You learn how to push dps pretty fast.
I also did that when I got SCH to 50. My brother wanted to speed run AK back in September 2013. This was when AK was considered hard and impossible to SR.
There was one time where I had to solo heal Titan HM final phase as an ilvl 55-ish SCH >.>. Everyone got knocked off but me, a DRG, and a WAR. Either you learn how to heal and dps or you fail.

Lol Yeah those are some options too. If anything will teach you how to get good with your class, it's Titan. XD

I feel like this isn't really that good of a way to get better at a class. For one as a melee dps you have some kind of positional to keep up with and you can't if you're tanking everything. As a ranged dps maybe but ranged dps but I feel like you would get more adequate practice dpsing actual duties and having someone parse for you, dummy parses are one thing but actually pulling out good dps while doing mechanics is something you won't learn much about in a dungeon so far below your level that you don't need a tank or healer for

You make a good point. I haven't dabbled much in the way of melee DPS so i shouldn't speak for them. Eh I was mainly meaning that when my friend and I were doing this, we really had to know our rotations to kill the bosses in some of those dungeons. I honestly didn't even think about positioning though as I am BLM. XD That kinda does throw off my entire post. lol

EDIT: I should say we really had to know our rotations to kill certain boss while also ignoring the boss mechanics for said fights. XD

I had a blast soloing Haukke Manor HM as a drg. The last boss was insane! Trying to time all of those CDs effectively... BFB, bloodbath, second wind, etc.

I'm gonna move on to some harder dungeons next, Copperhell HM here I come!

It's always a good mentality to push yourself as far as you can whenever possible. This goes for any activity in life; In unfamiliar situations, and especially when you panic, you tend to revert to your level of training.

You might be doing something completely mundane like a leve, but it doesn't matter - pull 6 mobs, try to dodge all their AoEs at the same time, the more unfamiliar situations you put yourself into the better it will serve your standard of play when you do step into a raid.

What you want is to have a holistic understanding of the combat system and your class's toolkit. It's what separates the average player who learns fights by raw memorization and simply wiping until they stop making mistakes, from those able to effortlessly improvise in new and challenging content.
