Why is BRD considered "support"

I really just don't like the idea of my TP/MP songs hamstringing my dps. I would rather the class as a whole be balanced around using those songs and numbers adjusted rather then eat a 15% damage penalty while they are active.

Actually this seems like the best route to go because people would be less reluctant to use those songs in random groups because they wont take a penalty while they are up.

Unfortunately due to human nature if a bard could do competitive or more damage and give support who do you think would be taken - all bards.

Support is party buffing so if the bard loses 15% then your party is gaining tons more in damage than the 15%. That's team work to a degree. You do have the option to not use your songs and do competitive damage though.

You misunderstand me. I am trying to say they should balance the class around having to use these songs in a way that does not rely on the damage penalty being applied while the songs are up, rather numbers should be tuned around the board to take that into account. For example 3% nerf (just an example) on various abilities while removing the damage penalty from songs.

That "nerf" is to all your abilities though, when you sing.
Another thing they could do is as soon as you stop singing, you lose all mobility (I mean no movement at all or the songs don't work).
You can't be a walking regen, have DPS like a DRG, and run around crazy.

I agree that there does need to be a WD increase...it's been decreasing with each patch, slowly...slowly.... that's all that's needed though (in my opinion).

Well that would mean you would do lower damage while not in song and would mean you are a support only. Why take a BRD when they don't use songs take a BLM, for example, since they do more damage.

BRD/MCH are in the same exact spot Bard has always been when progressing through new raid content. Despite their overall lower damage output vs every other class you still need MCH/BRD if you are to raid due to TP shortages being an actual thing you have to deal with. They bring too much utility, sustain and resource to a group to replace. AST buffs are random so don't count on them. Goad is only for one person and you will probably only get to use it on three people in the span of a raid instance.

I can't even recall a time I had to use TP turret in savage. It's always been mana, and even that has been downplayed in use when we get more accustomed to mechanics and the healers become more efficient.

Even better keep an eye on their MP through out the fight and sing when there is a no-dps window or a non dps check window. And as others said the fact we can move and provide all that support is why we are nerfed out of the gate anyway with lower WD. We tend to be the ones that will do mechanics in fights as well while the melee just keep pummeling stuff - though I'm liking that the fights are getting more everyone needs to do stuff then ow there's this one or two things that need to be done that 2 ppl can handle.

That's what a bard is though. That's why the class was created. To have a ranged dps class that is considerably more mobile with their support abilities in mind. If you don't want a dps loss while you're supporting the party you might like dragoon who can crit buff the group while pumping out top dps. And in reality, how often are you really using paeon/ballad? Because if it's hurting your personal dps that much you may want to have a talk with your dps/healers on how they can better play their jobs for sustainability sake- I know that's had to happen in a few of my raid groups.
