Does Eorzea have Baseball?

I didn't know whether to post in in General Discussion or Lore. Does Eorzea have baseball? The goblins seem to be fans because their camps are all named after positions in baseball, shortstop, longstop, etc.

Do Eorzeans actually play any sports? Does such a thing exist?

Goblin names tend to be descriptive; Brayflox Alltalks is named as such likely because she talks to everybody (and often) despite goblins generally being rather brusque, and Quikthinx Allthoughts is probably named as such because he's a quick thinker who wants to control all thoughts.

The Longstop is probably named as such because it's somewhere you're stopping at for a long time. Conversely, the Shortstop is a place you're stopping at for a short time.

(And there is no "longstop" position in baseball. In cricket, but not in baseball.)

That's not to say there are no Eorzean sports, or that they don't have any analogues to real-world sports on Hydaelyn. Just that the goblin place names are... probably not referencing baseball (or another real-world sport).

Thal is half of the brothers Nald'thal, the patron god of Ul'dah.

Thal is essentially the lord of the underworld. It's a curse, not a sports reference.

It's more like when we say bollocks since its used in the same way most the time...which is not a reference to a sports ball

One of the shortcomings of text-based communication is that it's not possible to see when someone's not completely serious; you can't see my smirk when I deliberately misinterpret the balls in question, for instance. But thank you, both of you, for setting me straight.

A friend and I were actually talking about the issue of cursing in Eorzea. Thal and his balls get a lot of attention, but why doesn't anyone ever swear by Menphina's moons, or Llymlaen's flow? They're also nice phrases, given to the same kind of double meaning.

But, uh, sportsball! You know, polo was originally played with a goat's head. We've got mounted troops and goats, I wouldn't be surprised if someone was playing some kind of game with 'em.

Funnily enough Gridanians seem to swear "Matron's Teats!" a lot, referring to the old joke about Nophica being, well... bountiful, .

I'm too ladylike and refined for that however - the harshest I ever exclaim is "Azeyma's Rays!", but I guess due to how these things work some smartalec is bound to find a risque double meaning in there anyway.
