With the 5 month break and how the last few months more and more people are realizing how 3.0 is just 2.0, but less. I can see the population taking a huge hit if 3.1 isn't amazing.
They deserved a vacation after A Realm Reborn was release, Heavensward really isn't particularly good once you're past the main story, not "I could do this for three months!" good, at least, let alone five... This really is an ill-timed vacation...
I mean, they absolutely do deserve vacations, everyone does, but to release an expansion with less content than your original launch and then take your vacation? That's going to sting the community... A Realm Reborn had more to it by virtue of the Relic quest alone, Crystal Tower was meant to be in it from launch as well... Heavensward? Well, I'm just wondering why Relics and Void Ark were scheduled for 3.1, when I remember the complaining about no content between 2.0 and 2.1... Heck, if those Sky-Islands alone were in 3.05 or something, I'd probably be singing a completely different tune right now...
I'd say I wish I took the main scenario slower, but I'm not sure I could have gone any slower... Glad Seal Rock at least lets me avoid Fractal and Neverreap... Can't imagine what kind of twisted mind figured that would be "good enough" for the playerbase while they delay 3.1 a month or two... Did SE recently hire Kefka?
Given the amount of threads lately have been about how boring the game currently is, the game will probably see a fair number of people unsubbing until then.
Though, I would have to think that SE has at least seen the amount of threads and comments about such things and is, at least, going to make an attempt at trying to keep some people from doing that. They could easily get a lot of people to stick around for at least another month if they removed the loot lockout on Alex normal.
*shakes his head at people who say 3.0 didn't offer much*
Three new jobs, increase level cap with new skills included (and crafts to cover the increased level cap), unsynced party (ie solo dungeoning), loads of new dungeons, new primals, flying, new zones, new city, new idle town, new gear, new hunts, new quests, new gathering systems, FC crafting, airships... am I missing more? Probably.
If anything, we're very spoiled with how much we get in the patches (how many games would give you something like Gold Saucer in a patch?), some of them are near-expansion-quality in themselves. I have no issues with lack of content and I play a lot. I was told by someone the other day about how in WoW you're lucky to get a patch of FFXIV quality ever. Everything is expac except bug fixes and balancing, so I'm told.
If I played any other game as much as I play FFXIV, I'd probably be bored.

Avoiding a temporary drop in subscribers and a whole lot of complaining on the forums.
vs.
Much-needed personal downtime after working a grueling development cycle, the neglect of which could lead to numerous issues including long-term health problems and strained relations with family and loved ones.
{Hmmm.}
I'm happy it will pop only on November. I'll have time to complete my esoterics set that I still only have 2 parts since I had to level from scratch after the expansion. I feel sorry for the ones who have time and are on par with the content.
Same, I'm SUPER hyped for the explorations, a content I can do with my 2 friends that play too and with the Lord of Verminion minigame. AND a way to get top level equips that doesn't require me to raid, yay!!
I'm even thinking about going to Limsa to shout YOSHIDAAAAAAAAAAA because the hype airship sailed here.
