Two questions for those who played ffxi.
1. How do you compare ffxiv map with ffxi map on release date?
2. How do you compare ffxiv map with the current ffxi map?

In terms of size, I'm not sure honestly. FFXI felt much larger to me. In terms of variety, there is no comparison. FFXI had tons of different zones all with unique landmarks, styles, mobs, and music.

I put that on when I play this game.

1. XIV was larger in scale, but XI has a lot more variety and themes based on Technological area, i.e Areas where the Kuluu and Zilarts were has a lot of cerment structures and the spine present through the zone.
2. Currently XI is 100x larger, it's actually nearing the zone cap iirc.
Hmm Launch vs Launch XIV wins bigger maps but XI takes the cake for having more zones and varying areas.
XIV vs Current XI ofcourse XI wins in size AND variation because 9 years have passed since its release and it is ever expanding.

So yes, 9 years later XI is pretty large in scale, but per square area XIV wins but it's also pretty "empty".
One zone in FFXI is equal to one Aetheryte camp and the surrounding area.
So all you'd have to do is count the number of zones that were available at FFXI's release in Japan (I don't know this statistic)
And compare it to the number of camp sites available to us at release (22, plus the 3 city states, and the 6-7 dungeons accessible at the time of release)
Do that, and you'd have your answer.
The reason XIV feels smaller is that each city state is closer to the other. Windurst and San'doria had about 7 zones seperating them. Limsa and Gridania have about 5.
The trip to Jeuno in FFXI can take well over 45 minutes on foot (chocobo's have a time limit of 30 minutes). The trip from La Noscea to Uldah is 15-20 minutes, and half of it is by boat. The rest is a road that cuts right through the massive Thanalan map.
There's also the issue of the stagnancy of the maps. Eastern Thanalan isn't very different looking from Western Thanalan. If you took screenshots of either spot and compared, you'd be hard pressed to spot a difference. That has a psychological effect. If the area around you isn't changing much, you must not be going anywhere, so you subconsciously think the area is smaller than it actually is.
This is good news!
I like the gameplay mechanics of the game, but most of us will agree that content is lacking.
If ffxi, started with a small map but currently have a huge map and lots of content, then I have hope that this game will sooner or later become better.
regardless of how large or small XI was.. the only thing we had to do at JP launch end game wise up until Zilart was released(NA Launch basically) was kill Roc, Simurgh, and Serket w/ a 50 cap.
I have no doubt that SE will get this game pointed in the right direction... After 1.19 despite the PL issue.. I'm LOVING the changes and the game... can't see myself playing anything else...
