Comparable to? When you put FFXIV storyline side to side to other previous FFs, it stands out with big titles like FFXII, FFV and FFIV. Maybe not FFVI/VII level, but it's a great storyline for a MMO game. Compare it to other big MMOs like Ragnarok, WOW and Tera and you'll see that FFXIV has a much more in-depth quest line and story.

There are investigation quests that actually require research outside the game (such as one requiring you to figure out that you're supposed to scan a bar code, another where you have to translate morse code, etc).

I'm not really interested in comparing it to other MMOs though. I just take FFXIV's story for what it is to me - lackluster. Not compared to anything, just lackluster on its own. For an MMO, sure, it may be above average compared to most, I'll agree. But on its own, it isn't anything special for me.

It has not engaged me for the majority of it. The only time I've been engaged by XIV's story is for certain memorable characters and their deaths.

The strong points of this game for me are the combat, game systems (such as the ability for one character to play any job), and grinds that don't drive me to the brink of insanity or make me run out of things to do too quickly. Not the story. I have The Witcher 3 for example for my story desires.

Firstly, I think you're confusing the quality of the narrative with how the storyline is relayed to the player in the form of quests, because the two are totally different concepts. It seems to me your problem is how the quest system in FFXIV holds your hand with telling you where to go and what to do, rather than just giving you a basic hint and leaving it up to you to figure out yourself. In other words, like FFXI's style of questing:

That is no exaggeration - that is exactly how FFXI's story and quests were handled.

Although some might find that style of questing to be fun, really in practice it turned out not to work quite so well - all it does is drive players to look up online guides for the information, inevitably leading it inaccurate and incomplete information as people struggle to find out what they have to do exactly and often just plain give up. All the ARR system of questing does is cut out this middleman and tell you what you need to do simply. If it's that much of an issue, turn off the Duty List and quest notifications in the Config.

Well, that's fair enough, but really, it's not like some previous FF games have truly remarkable storylines either (my own opinion of course but since FFX, the quality of storylines of FF games has, been a mixed bunch, from FFX's ridiculous dream people, to FFXII's 'Star Wars Episode IV in Ivalice', to the impenetrable psychobabble that was FFXIII's story and it's sequels - even FFXI's storyline ran off the rails eventually with recent expansions (the retconning started with Wings of the Goddess and continuing right through with the addons) contradicting previous storylines and rendering the earlier extended original narrative moot.

It seems to me that given your earlier comment about preferring The Secret World to FFXIV, it's more you're comparing apples to oranges - both are MMORPGs, but have totally different settings and storylines, and thus maybe this game really isn't your cup of tea. Personal preference for a particular genre is different to a game having 'issues', as your preference is purely subjective - based on your own individual tastes rather than any underlying design flaw with the game. So again, I think FFXIV ARR simply isn't for you.

My first language isn't english, but I understand what he's saying, he's saying that the way raid works, the DPS's are too intense (they are) that healers and tanks have the need to adopt and basically stop doing their role and help DPS, so tanks have to dps hard besides tanking and obviously at least one of the healers and a reason why now people is being rejects certain jobs, when binding coil of bahamut was mainly about mechanics and a few DPS checks but not hard enough that even tanks and healers had to focus hard on this. Alexander is basically just a bunch of DPS checks, and I find it boring compared CoB mechanic wise.

Your experience of this game is not the "state of the game".

A4S has been cleared with a Paladin. Your team not beating A1S is because of your players, not your classes. Classes get more important in A3S and A4S, and even then...A4S has been cleared using a Paladin.

Easier to clear as4 without paladin. That's a big issue. I had crafted accessories in 2.0+ which gave me huge amount of str so my dps was quite high. Nice that that option out the window. I had dex stats too to boost block/parry rate, worked great, out the window. Guess diversity is too hard for them to design for. Just make a bunch of outfits to glamour that's enough diversity.

Strict dps content with no proper dps meter, mind boggles at what goes through their minds with that. Do they think anyone clearing this content is not using meters hmmm? Hypocritical for them to think they doing a good job in making "tough content" this way. The fact that "tanks" have to focus on not just tanking but dps'ing as well not to mention healers have to dps aswell.

Aside from AS there is not much to do in this game beside leveling every class. Cheap design really. Hell even crafting has gone to hell. All this high end gear to craft what?

Also what is a Dragon Knight?

It's what the DRG Job was occasionally mistranslated as in certain previous FF games (for instance, FFIX). So yeah, it's just another name (albeit, a pretentious one) for DRG.

In other languages the name for Dragoon directly translates to Dragon Knight.
At least that is what I believe the poster was intending to say.
