Really, that's all yours does for you? So far (up to the rank 26 mission) my echo has allowed me to watch past events (several times), speak moogle, hear the voices of the elementals, and speak sylph.

But yeah, it would be fun to have the echo affect other parts of the game than just the main story quests.
