At least initially. The game's economy has been in the dumpster for more than half a year... and a full restart is not an option. There are people with TONS of gil and until all the excess leaves the economy yeah, the system will not be so accessible to anyone else.

Gil has actual value now, and the value is dictated by how much money is in circulation. It's not representative of what value SE has set for gil initially in this new economy, so if you want to participate but aren't part of the population with tons of cash.. well, what you can do is try to get a piece of that pie. Like you said, everything seems to cost a fortune, and that can be either disadvantage... or an advantage.
