MT/OT problems or WHAT DO I DOOO

I did my first 8-man party runs as a WAR OT and both went fine but I realized about midway through Castrum Meridianum that I had no idea what I was supposed to do as OT and just sort of rolled around like an idiot. I decided to rectify this by doing some research before the next queue but I still don't really have a clear idea about what to do.

I know OT is often responsible for keeping aggro on adds during the bosses but both times, a healer insisted to kite the adds so I just DPS'd because I didn't know what else to do.

Is there a specific thing I should be doing as OT? What little I could find with the amount of time I had before just gave skill rotations, which is cool, but if I'm supposed to be doing certain duty as OT, I would like to actually do it instead of just becoming another DPS.

On that note, any general tips on both roles would really help. I'm very new to this stuff (first MMO + just barely got to level 50) so every little bit helps. Thank you!

As a Warrior, you DPS your face off. Then you put your face back on and DPS some more.

At one point yes, the OT did take on the adds, most of the time. Nowadays though the pre 3.0 content doesn't really need to, most everyone is so over geared for it you don't need to worry about the adds too much anymore.

The OT role in FFXIV is basically as you said, they handle adds, and if there's a tank swap mechanic due to stacks or debuffs they'll usually come in temporarily then eventually let the MT take it back. OTs typically stack STR accessories harder than MTs.

For these reasons, people usually give WAR OT duty since they burst adds down harder, do more damage in OT stance, can control aggro very easily up or down, and there's no specific advantage to them getting attacked compared to what DRK and to a lesser extent PLD get, besides Vengeance ticks on the enemy.

Also yes as Eye Gore mentioned, you can ignore adds in some content since we overgear it so much.

So a WAR OT is basically a roided-out DPS? Sounds rad.

OT essentially focuses on adds and adding dps when possible, while MT focuses on tanking the bosses and holding aggro. On trash pulls, either the MT tanks everything or they split the work.

Castrum is a bit strange, and every group divvies the work up differently from my experience. The main idea for OT in Castrum is tanking adds and grabbing whatever the MT doesn't during the cannon phases.

If it helps, your job as OT isn't much different than being MT:
    - Make sure no monsters are eating the healers and dps. In content you overgear, this will most likely all be handled by the MT (but not always, so keep your eyes peeled).
    - Do as much damage as you can. This means taking off Defiance.
    - Don't stand in things that are going to kill you.

Well, even if you're only 50 (as I see you are), chances are the group as a whole is so overgeared for any pre-3.0 encounters that those encounters don't matter. Hell, even getting up to lvl 52 causes you to have better gear than all but the absolute top-end gear in 2.5. In other words, I wouldn't start worrying about it until you grind your way through the main scenario and the dungeons on your way to 60. Just dps your face off and don't stand in things.
Once you reach 3.0 content, what the "OT" does tends to matter. For example, in the Bismarck trial, there actually isn't an OT; both tanks just grab whatever adds are on their side of the island. On Ravana, the OT just dps'es the crap out of the boss while not messing up mechanics. In Alexander, the responsibilities of the OT change depending on which boss you are doing.

That is because, nowadays, Castrum Meridianum is just a faceroll pew-pew, rush-rush, kill-kill, lol-lol thing. No one cares and just start to kill and explode stuffs.

But yeah, in more serious content (Primals hard/EX and onward) OT mainly need to grab adds, tank swap and/or replace dead tank.
