Outside of the opener, do people still use oGCDs when they have ammunition loaded, or do you stick to split/slug/clean shot until you have no ammo?

For the most part yeah. Ammunition only works with Weaponskills (split, slug, clean, hot, lead, grenade and spread). OGCDs do not consume ammo.
