My only gripe with crafting thus far is that there are no ifs/ands/buts you WILL have to farm, or buy, crystals at some point.

You know what really is hard and annoying, and my only problem with crafting? Is that even if you have all crafters leveled up, are familiar with your CP management, cross class skills and reliably HQ lvl 60 recipes with NQ mats. You --- WILL NEED --- to overmeld your gear to even be close to be able to "unlock" 1 star recipes. 2 star? Haha! you will need to MAX meld. I.E. spend 50m gil to be able to try your hands on 2 stars.
This is what I hate about crafting, you will spend MUCH, MUCH MORE time making gil to meld your gear, than you will with red scrips. Not worth at all, I'm almost giving up, my problem is not with mats, with scrips or w/e. But with the excess of melds that you need to do.
And then you wonder why some people buy gil...

You're exaggerating. I've successfully crafted 2-star L60 HQ items, and I didn't have to overmeld all that much. None of my gear is pentamelded. You know what really is hard and annoying, and my only problem with crafting? Or I am unaware of something, or you are doing a miracle.
My stats with lvl 60 white HQ gear and some IV melds and the requirements for 2* LTW crafts. I would need max/penta meld every single item and maybe I would be able to try.

Or the i170 offhand: the upgrade from i140 OH to i170 offhands produces the same stat boost as getting the i180 mainhand.
In my own case, my wife and I bought red scrip i180 BSM, CRP, and i180 GSM mainhands.
Having BSM+CRP+GSM mainhands lets us make the offhands for all the other classes, at which point we will be able to do all the 2-star crafts.
Capping red crafter scrip takes about 2 hours, if you wait for a gold star on something easy. I prefer it to the 2.x grind for Oaknots, myself.

For what it is worth, the red scrip system is bad in my opinion. Why? I have very little interest in gathering. Now I spend most of my time gathering to spend a short amount of time crafting. The end products being very limited, sell for a very high price that pushes most ppl out of the market. This bothers me as I enjoy having a market to sell to and ppl can't afford a $10m gil main hand and really have no current reason to buy top level hq 2 star crafts. This is also the reason I don't buy mats from the MB, I see no way to recover my investment. Top level gear leads no where and as Yoshi has said with battle gear, it isn't going to be that good. Where do I go? I make my gear because I can, beyond that I have no interest in grinding more mats out to make gear for sale.
The end of the 2.xx system was nice, beast tribe quests for some mats, coil and desynth for other mats, little gathering to round it out. A well rounded system that brought all content together to craft in. Don't like one of the steps in there? Buy it from the MB. Currently gathering is the only way to craft. Other than that I use to send SE a few thoughts on how to improve the system and what made it fun in 2.0, more recently I just send them daily mail reminding them that the 3.0 system sucks. That is just me.

the worst part is that savage alexander participation represents such a small minority portion of the playerbase. when you're intentionally gimping craftable gear to limit 5000 people (rough estimate of those on or past AS3) worldwide from completing a raid too soon, then your priorities are not straight.

Ever consider that the reason that so few people have finished it is because they can't buy OP crafted DoM/DoW gear?the worst part is that savage alexander participation represents such a small minority portion of the playerbase. when you're intentionally gimping craftable gear to limit 5000 people (rough estimate of those on or past AS3) worldwide from completing a raid too soon, then your priorities are not straight.
Sounds to me like things are working exactly as they should.

Most haven`t completed it because they didn`t throw $4000 in to a gaming system with a DDR4 based GPU to play simon says with action bars or square dance around floor graphics that one shot you. Once you know the win sauce rotations by class in this game, you can run them with a macro. All you need to do is avoid the nukes and that`s all on your GPU and internet connection being in sync.
This is why fun needs to be a first priority in a video game. Hard is an illusion.
