    There were black loading screens if you switched regions, if you teleported, if you went into instances, if you went to the market wards, if you used the ferry and airships and so on.
    But yes, so long you ran around in the open world within the same region there was no loading screen. Instead you had long canyons you have to run throught for 1-2 minutes between that what we have now as zones. 2.0 zone loading is faster than 1.0 canyon running.

    Even with all the pasted areas in the Shroud it looked a lot better color-wise. Much richer green and it was a bit darker with the closed canopy. It felt like a dense forest you could get lost in. The pillar area in Thanalan with the tunnel down to it and wolves (can't remember what it was called) was really nice too.

    I... really don't get the intense nostalgia some people on this forum feel toward a game that was so poorly received that it was one of the biggest flops in MMO history. The areas were big, yes, but they were random collections of copy/pasted map sections, and the "forest" was mostly made up of unrealistic tunnel-like corridors. There was a single secret area copy/pasted throughout the map. The whole game had a claustrophobic feel to it despite the areas being "bigger." Each world zone (Black Shroud, Thanalan, etc) was all one enormous zone, but the game ran abysmally and couldn't handle lots of people in one place because of it. As far as I can tell, the reason everywhere was so claustrophobically designed was because it couldn't handle very many people/mobs in line of sight, so they couldn't have large, open areas with the super-zones.

    Seriously, FFXIV 1.0 was not a good game. If it was, it would never have been completely rewritten. The zones were not well designed in 1.0. If they were, 2.0 would have had the same zones. They were terrible, and they were fixed, and they are better now.

    No it's more rose tinted glasses. People only remember the few good parts and completely ignore/forget the avalanche of horrible parts of 1.x. The game that these people are "remembering" never actually existed. The reality was much much worse.

    and here we go again, OP is asking a legit question and the typical bunch of "never really have played FFXIV 1.0, but still i love to talk shit about it to sound cool" players come around to derail the thread.

    @topic

    i remember a good bunch of those places from 11 and 1.0 aswell.it was those places you came around randomly and instantly had to take a pictures of, in case you wouldn't remember the place lol.
    sastasha in 1.0 was a simple open world dungeon.and the sastasha that is known as a dungeon in ARR, was rebuild after the image of another open world dungeon found in la noscea that had a closed off area with an underground pier.

    it would be nice to have more explorable zones like that back in the game, but as it is the current open world is seen as nothing but a place to either fate, hunt or gather.without open world group parties like you had them in 1.0 and FFXI the reason to create such places is probably just a waste of ressources in terms of development.some of those places were already wasted on 1.0 because most spend their time leve leveling or simply went for favorite exp grounds like raptors or beastmen strongholds to exp at.

    It was more like a wall maze with a forest on the other sides of the wall.

    1.0 was more designed to attract a certain crowd that being more the XI player base I think which was a different type of game play which current day MMO player base goes "omg that game style sucks" The concept they were going for was there but was half baked implemented.

    Speak for yourself, I was there and I don't miss anything. I may look back fondly on the experience, but hell if I want to go back there. I see most of the 'We don't know what we missed out on' from those who actually weren't there at all. The same people that also want all the souvenirs of having been there given to them for dollars to the pixel (not even kidding).
