I keep playing XIV because I don't have a house yet. T-T....
I keep playing FF14 because it's my new medicine. I've been dosing on WoW for 10 years, and most of those years I spent RPing, because gameplay became far less interesting as the years went on, while RPing stayed fresh.
Until... (read on if you want some entertainment!)
RP elitists began to make up 90% of the RP community in that game. I took a lot of shit over the years, dealt with it, turned the other cheek, and moved on. But what finally tore it was my realization, upon dealing with a certain individual whom I shall not/cannot name here, that RP, in WoW, was nothing more than a marriage simulation and an Are You Smarter Than A Lore Geek game, because if you weren't being hit on/hitting on someone, it was a pissing contest to see who knew more lore than the other. Because knowing lore apparently makes one's RP more valid than the other (?).
The individual RPed a pandaren who was perverted and loved to stare at women. He always hung out at the central RP point. Me, RPing a night elven death knight whose personality largely died, leaving her with nothing more than archaic speech patterns and robot-like responses, while at the same time not taking anything seriously (that's important!), decided, You know what? How comical would it be if my character (remember this, character, that's important) suddenly proposed to the pervy panda? It'd be hilarious to see those two as lovers, being complete opposites. I was reminded of that old play, Importance of Being Earnest.
So, making the biggest mistake in my RP life, I had my character propose to the pervy panda the only way she knew how: poetically, and boldly. "Be mine."
This opened up the fattest can of worms on Eorzea--I mean, Azeroth. I didn't realize it at the time, not until about 3 or 4 "lover tiffs" in whispers later -- this went on for about a month and a half -- that the person was looking for legit romance, in a twelvedamned video game. He got clingy. Not the cute kind of clingy, I mean the kind of clingy that only exists on a dangerous level. He wanted to know my RL info, blah blah blah, if it was okay for him to do polygamy, etc...
After I finally closed that can of worms (believe me, it wasn't easy, and I nearly reported him to Blizzard because I thought he was suicidal), I cancelled my 10 year subscription, said "Fuck you" to WoW's entire populace (except friends, luv you, Gary), and came the hell over to this game.
I never went back.
EDIT: In closing, people, mainly roleplayers, please listen. Don't stake anything on in-game romance. They're pixels. You don't know who's on the other side. You only know the bridge they've created with the materials they were given: their character. Don't cross that bridge unless you know, beyond the shadow of doubt, that you can trust that person. I made that mistake, and I've learned from it. To watch that pandaren go through what I did, on a more severe level, was very reflective, and at the same time, disturbing. Wherever he is, whatever he's doing, I hope he's alright.
Thank you for reading~♪

Actually it was Wyrmrest Accord. A lot of the 18+ stuff happened in party/guild/whispers (thank God), so it wasn't as bad as Moon Guard yet in that regard. As far as the elitism goes, I'd say Wyrmrest Accord and Moon Guard are the same now. It never used to be that way.

If you had to pin me down, and ask what exactly I play for, I would reply with the stories. I enjoy going through the main story quest, the various job quests, and even some of the raiding quests enough to justify playing. It's not the highest quality writing and fantasy, but it's enough. I also enjoy the fact that I can log on for a limited amount of time (less than an hour) and still get a few things done.

I keep seeing this mentioned all the time but I really have to question it now. I'm not saying that that mindset is wrong but isn't this mindset more fitting for mobile games? I've tried a few like puzzle and dragons, monster strike, etc and these games fits the quote like the above to a tee. They even reward you just for logging in.

Sadly, that's the type of people SE is trying to get :/ The mobile "don't have time to actually put in time and effort into a mmo" type of people. The same people who want the same gear for 1/10th the effort as the people who actually put in lots of hours. The same ones who don't want to have to think about what gear to get, so SE only adds 1 option, instead of adding multiple options and side pieces to really customize your job in a way. Like you said, the mindset isn't wrong, but it's more for mobile games, not mmos. Mmos are meant to be a huge timesink and require you to put in a lot of hours to obtain stuff. It's how mmos (pre-WoW) survived for 13-16 years (unlike newer ones that fit the mobile generation and die in 1-3 years). When you can obtain the best gear for less than an hour a day of playing, the gear loses its feeling of being an achievement, especially when it's then thrown out the next update.I keep seeing this mentioned all the time but I really have to question it now. Waiting for 3.1 to see the new stuff.
then waiting for 3.2, 3.3.. until 4.0.
After that, if I have the feeling that 4.0 is the same (changed a bit from the copy paste) than 3.0, and since that one is close to the same than 2.0, I might consider going to another game to give my money.
Until then, I'll try to enjoy a bit.![]()

Because it is fun. The most fun I've had with any MMO. Most MMOs I've played, mostly F2P ones, just can't keep my interest long enough and is most likely because most of their coolest items and mounts are locked behind the CashShop. FFXIV is actually my first P2P MMO and I like that most items you can actually obtain in game and I just love the game so far. I don't know how it'll be a year from now, but I hope I'll still enjoy the game.
