"Fish Gets Away" at 524 gathering?

I'm trying to go for the big fish and I am still getting fish gets away messages at 524 gathering. For some of the 2.0 big fish, is it just a low catch chance? Or am I doing something wrong? At this point, I'm pretty sure I have higher gathering at lvl 60 than was possible in 2.0.

You have more than sufficient gathering for everything in 2.0 and it's just RNG being evil. The only thing you can do is keep trying.

Yes, almost all 2.0 Big Fish have a built-in escape chance that no amount of Gathering can overcome. You just have to deal with it, and wait for a lucky roll of the dice.

I must have hooked like thirty Anomalocaris before I caught one, and that was with sufficiently high-level gear to catch Nepto Dragon.

Exactly, for fishing there is a gathering cap which is under 100% success rate for every single "green" fish.

All you can do is get to that cap and hope for the best. Over 100 fish, everyone will run into at least 1 to 2 dozen fish that are particularly annoying to reel in.

Such a large sample size actually makes fishing RNG one of the fairest measures of progression out there for completionists.

Your 524 was achievable in 2.55, people had it, and big fish got away from them too.

    You are doing nothing wrong.

Just imagine with that amount of gathering you have right now, you have raised the % success rate of the fish you are going to get to 75% success rate to catch. Before that, the success rate is 50%, but now it's 75%. (lol)

Some green fishes in the first page are 100% catch, while other have lower rate.

I think that was non-FSH classes ... I only reached 496 gathering w/out food on my botanist and miner after super-melding my forager off-hand and getting the Lucis tool; the best gathering food available gave you another 24 gathering, and you could get another 10 from the FC buff for a grand total of 526 (http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/RKSF) -- a figure that was impossible for fishing due to the lack of an off-hand tool. But yea, I'd imagine there's instead some hidden max catch-chance below 100% for these fish, or we're going to need something in the neighborhood of 600+ gathering to reduce the misses ...

401 from max melded gear and lucis + iL70 battle accessories melded with III materia + food, 24 & FC buff, 10 = 435 max.

    And fish STILL got away.

Check out my fisher alt http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...acter/1417349/

I did make and meld her a new right side set so she would have GPs, but its only 2 more gathering than with her old combat accessories.

    *435 max, not 535

but yea, with the extra 100 points of gathering that you get from leveling from 50 to 60, it seems odd that level 50 fish will still get away ...

I currently have 611 gathering without food, and some of these fish still get away. Several level 60 fish also get away at this level.
