you are confusing Def and MDef with job resistances, here is a picture for your convenience (added in patch 2.4)

Maybe I should be more clear.
The defense stat doesn't do anything. (So stuff that augments it, like Foresight and Protect, don't do anything)

The vulnerability thing is different from what I was getting at.
