This... Not sure what this business about third party programs are. The PS4 controller is plug and play.i use PS4 controller on the PC natively. though you have to go and customize the CFG file in your documents for it... the PS4 controller is native plug and play. what it does not do is set the buttons in the proper positions. so you have to go into the CFG and look for every line for the Alias.
so when you open it in notepad look for the <game_pad settings> and find Alias.
copy this line and replace the whole string line.
Alias {90,91,88,89,41,40,32,33,73,72,48,49,3,2,1,0,4,6,10,5,7,11,9,8}
after that. turn off what you used before and the PS4 controller will be native plug and play.
sadly if you connect any other controller or software to change button layout it will reset.

yeah it's plug & play, but it's functioning as a generic PC controller with messed up default mapping. FFXIV allows us to remap the buttons but some other games don't. some of them don't even support anything but X360 controller so these 3rd pt software are like a life savior to us DS4 on PC users. if you plan to use DS4 as your main PC controller you should have one of these software.
