Exactly how do you propose people work for their own house, when there are no plots available?
Just curious...
seeing as how the last lala got shot down in a burst of flames lol... i'll try and tread lightly.
Is it really that hard to find a FC in a massive multi player game? No ones even saying you have to become some extroverted personality and chat up the place all the time. Just put a application in and go use the stables. Hell just walking around in one of the starter city's would sooner or later warrent you an invite from someone noticing you don't have an FC, at least thats what I do :P

Have an FC... don't have a house.
You're missing the point. It's not that there isn't a work around, it's that there is a need to have a work around that effectively amounts to stable begging. Locking away chocobo colors behind millions of gil is silly. That's like needing a special house room to use the glamour feature; it's a very individual feature that has nothing to do with the FC.
Can I log in, right now, talk to my FC leader, ditch my current FC, join an FC with a stable, use it to get the color I want, then ditch that FC and join up with my original FC? Yes, but why the hell is that the working "fix" for coloring a chocobo?
... but since it apparently is, if anyone needs a stable for a couple of days on Brynhildr, poke me when I'm online, and I'll invite you to Solitude.
I thought there was talk about changing the housing "use" rules. Meaning people on your friends list could use your garden, stable, etc.. if you allowed it. I thought I read that somewhere.
I'm pretty sure it's in the works for 3.1.
and i completely agree with you my friend, i am not missing your point. The issue here isn't anything but the housing situation not have enough places. I wonder if SE will ever back the Devs to get more server space but sooner or later they will be shooting themselves in the foot not to. In order to keep things the way they are and not waste man hours revamping the entire housing system they're gonna have to dedicate several servers just for the housing areas.

While joining an FC is a convenient solution, not all FCs have houses or are capable of getting one. So let's say you're in a smaller FC, probably one that's just a few friends together. You can't get a house. So each of you needs to do the "workaround" every time you want to do something with stables or gardening.
The upcoming changes will alleviate the pressure certainly, but the only real permanent solution is instanced housing.
