I can't believe this is still going.
I can't believe this is still going.
britain was responsible for the transportation of 3.5 million African slaves to the Americas. does look evil
No. The former was effectively a fallen angel that literally served the Middle Earth analog to Satan, and figured once his boss got kicked to the curb he'd try his hand in the evil overlord game, and used an army made up of elves his master literally tortured into evil shadows of their former selves.
Through modern lenses of course it does. Very few people cared either way in the 17th century. Many of the slaves were sold out by their own people. There were many african kingdoms that profited greatly by selling their own people into slavery.
This thread is awfully political for a thread about allying with a group of people that want to behead our mothers.
The problem with the OPs suggestion is this:
The Garleans won't stop with just Beastmen.
slavery has existed for longer than that though, know what the origin of the word 'slave' comes from? Was a normal part of history and believe it or not still goes on today, and not just in the way you would assume. As mentioned above many slaves were sold by their own people as well and the British empire was one of the first powers to crusade against slavery.
Also people keep assuming those that like the empire are trying to say they are misunderstood, they aren't. From our characters points of view they aren't and from the city states PoV they aren't. Those that dislike them are more than justified in doing so. But as mentioned numerous times some of us like playing the antagonists or just an opposing faction in general.
Are you kidding? There's LIBRARIES worth of fan fiction detailing how Sephiroth is actually not that bad. And this was a guy who was Shinra's most lethal and ruthless enforcer even BEFORE he went looney tunes and decided to kill everybody in the world for Mother Dearest. XD
Joker has less fangirls, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't some kind of sob story out there assuring us of the sweet and tortured soul lying behind the madman's facade. :P
Nah, there's always gonna be someone out there trying to humanize the bad guys, and that makes sense - because these people are humans. Each of us has exacly one human that we can truly say that we understand, and that is ourselves. It can be difficult to believe that other human beings are so different that they can do such horrible things, and so we try to find explanations or reasons why villians are the way that they are.
The fact that Sephiroth, Joker, and the Empire are FICTIONAL human beings only further muddies the water. Since they're made-up individuals, they might as well be aliens for all we can assume about them. The monstrous things they do may mimic the monstrous things people have historically done in real life, but those monstrous things are kind of empty without real human beings behind them.
The Empire might seem straightforward and clear in their goals, but that's only because their goals are really all there are to their characterization.
lol so true. after reading this post, i decided to just copy and paste the line "Sephiroth is actually not that bad" and got hit with pages of "he isn't evil" or "well it was "X" fault!! >_<"Are you kidding? There's LIBRARIES worth of fan fiction detailing how Sephiroth is actually not that bad. And this was a guy who was Shinra's most lethal and ruthless enforcer even BEFORE he went looney tunes and decided to kill everybody in the world for Mother Dearest. XD
