I don't think they are that much better written than the opposing side. The empire has no redeeming qualities, no goal beyond "kill everyone who opposes us and take over everything", and have no qualities that makes me want to sympathize with them. The empire can appear to be "cooler" just because of their execution and their style, but for me, it takes a lot more than that to get me to like them. Wait, I do like one thing about them; they're easy to beat up.
