I assume that Varis's appearance is based at least in part on Golbez.Dunno if you just wanna play a villain (which is fine. Who doesn't like playing the bad guy from time to time), or you honestly don't think that's THAT evil and the end justifies the means(which merits an eye roll you dark, edgy person, you.), but they're practically at Saturday Morning Cartoon levels of villainy. The only way they could be more plainly evil is if they all had mustaches they twirled while plotting, and black capes...
... well, hell. They're halfway there, already.

And we know that Golbez was being mind-controlled by a person from the moon ...
Additionally, didn't the 1st Garlean Emperor have many of his family members assassinated and that it was Nael (or was it Gaius) that carried out all that killing?
Might explain why Varis spits on his grandfather's coffin

[QUOTE=Daralii;3296068] Actually Varis and Gaius opposed it
Also this thread is hilarious

What, Doma?
They might have opposed it, but it doesn't seem like they exactly condemned it. The entirety of the XIVth was effectively disowned for Gaius acting out of line with arrest orders on their heads. On the other hand, Regula was given command of the greatest airship since Mhach and is personally guarding the Emperor; he hasn't exactly been punished for what he did.

I believe Nael was acting on his own with that Dalmund nonsense.

Sure the leaders of Garlean Empire, that we've seen so far, have shown us their interest in overtaking Eorzea but that doesn't mean all of the peoples are bad. It would most certainly be interesting to see the other side of the coin. Perhaps the Garlean Empire is not all we have perceived.
In any case, I think the OP wants to play as an actual villian and who am I to judge? I would definitely check it out if that was done.
(Main Story spoilers?)
Heck! Even playing as a "Warrior of Darkness" would pique my interest. :P

Garleans have equated the Twelve with Primals in the past (which I personally believe to be true), meaning the native religions of Eorzean humankind are as big of a threat to them as beast tribes. Wipe out them, 'crack eggs' with the ones who actually like humankind, and you're next.
A FIRM BELIEVER in the Favour System

Who's to say garleans couldn't summon primals? they may not be able to cast spells but nowhere does it mention that ability is needed to summon a primal. Besides the empire could be 'good' by general standards under different leadership, I doubt all garleans think the same way and Varis can't be emperor forever. (unless they wanna go all warhammer 40K on us)
Doesn't matter if those good ones aren't in power. As long as the ones in power call for conquest and ethnic cleansing, we will never be allied with them.Who's to say garleans couldn't summon primals? they may not be able to cast spells but nowhere does it mention that ability is needed to summon a primal. unless you ally with the good ones to overthrow those in power. their Emperor is crazy enough to leave Garlemald so we can assassinate him right here.
