When he got on my case I told him protect is kinda needed, he said if I'm a healer I should swiftcast it in that instance. I let him know that the swiftcast was used to revive him prior and it was still in cooldown. Buuuuut if they don't want out buffs, it's their problem.

I'll never waste a Swiftcast on protecting a tank that wants to run off. Call me a shitty healer for it if you want. They can either stay within range for 2 seconds or they can go without it. Especially if the tank is getting lips and is letting aggro run wild. Chances are they don't get healed either.
