Are my retainers robbing houses?

I just got my retainers to 50, and every time they come back they either bring me back housing items I see in yards or fish. It makes me think they are not actually working very hard. They have brought me a lot of Kelp and Fish too...

Are they just in the Mist enjoying a vacation as I pay them? Stealing from houses or whatever washes up from the shore?

I keep hoping my retainers are always stealing from the same house. After a few years there should be nothing left but an available plot to buy.

My retainer came back from her last venture with a Twin Adders banner. I mean, where would she even be able to get one of those if she didn't either swipe it from the Adders or someone who works for/with them? I don't even work with them myself.

For fishes, I get the distinct feeling that they're scamming us out of our Venture Tokens (also begs the question as to how do said Tokens benefit them exactly).

For everything else, though, it's fair game; but personally, I don't think they limit themselves to just houses...

Maybe this is leading up to a surprise from SE. All housing not being used will be gone because retainers have been dismantling them and bringing them to us
