I want to pay attention to the battle instead of keeping my eyes glued to to the combat log/action bars.

I never look at either of those. I have the party HP bar close to my action bar/center of the screen when I heal, so I can see the action+heal at the same time. Half the time I don't even notice the action bar, I just use macros/numbers. You just get used to the timing.
