I don't totally understand why gear damage is a thing?

As stated in the thread title, I don't totally understand why gear damage is a thing.

I can sort of understand from a raiding perspective, the same reason why cooldowns don't reset after a wipe -- a time sink to make progression take longer and stretch out the content. And I also understand that it gives players a simple little task to do to make the game feel more interactive and fleshed out.

However, I don't understand why three strangers should be made to suffer when I accidentally forget to repair before I queue for a dungeon as healer. I understand punishing me for being forgetful, but why a system that punishes the strangers as well? I just did this in The Vault. Either I had to step out and force them to wait for a new healer, or they had to deal with my pathetic heals (and almost complete lack of dps, making the dungeon take about 10 minutes longer than it normally does when I DPS heavily) because the right side of my gear hit 0% during the first pull.

Gil sinks. That's really all. When you generate gil on a system side through quests, leves, etc, you also need ways to take it out of the system, or else you see mad inflation occur.

It's just a money sink and I doubt it will be removed anytime soon. In fact gears now wear out faster than what it used to be at 2.1.

Its an attempt to add some sort of realism to the game. Stuff gets worn out as it gets used, and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Look at Iron Man in the movies. As he fights, his suit gets dinged and dented, scratched and torn ... he tinkers and repairs it, or just plain ol replaces it, a lot.

Well, (as someone else suggested in another thread) they should let me sink my gil into an NPC at the entrance of the dungeon. They could make it 5x the cost, or something, if gil is the real concern.

"Sohm Al. Be wary adventurer, you are the first of your kind to have stepped foot on these grounds for the past thousands of years.... except for this Arms Mender of course who makes mad business despite that fact."

Yeah, no. Go have your time sink. Dungeons already suffer from immersion-breaking parallels without misplaced NPCs becoming a part of the dungeon formula. And if of course you meant having the NPC on the over-world, out-of-instance side of the entrance, people just wouldn't pay out that 5x suggestion. Not when they can cut the price significantly by teleporting to a favoured location/home point and still enter the dungeon no matter where they are in the world.

Why not repair your own gear in the dungeon? To me, having at least the three or four crafting jobs needed by your main class to lvl 50 is essential if you intend to play properly at end game. That way you just need to carry a stack of Grade 6 Dark Matter (purchased via gil or seals) and can heal at any time.

Did you miss some of the weapons these boss fights use? I mean some of those things look like the could cleave the entire party in half in one swipe. Repeatedly banging on something over and over is going to cause damage.

5x the cost is chump change compared to how much you gil it took to repair your gear back in early 2.0.
