Red Mage (Tank) Please!

There were no real roles in previous FF's except Xi.

That's... not true. At all.

RDM could be a tank fairly easy, to be completely honest, as it was a tank of sorts in the original Final Fantasy. Red Mage was definitely one of the classes you put at the top of the party list to draw most of the attacks.

Less because of any grand design and more because of lack of options. There was only one knight job in Fighter, of everyone that shouldn't be hit (which is everyone else now), yeah, Red Mage arguably took hits the best. Dunno I'd call that classical Red Mage tanking.
