Phoenix Down

Has anyone ever had an actual constructive use of a Phoenix Down? I'm having difficulty placing an actual use case because there always seems to be some other alternative due to the restrictions placed on them by their being unique and not usable in battle. I could see use for it and justification for being unique if they could be used in battle, but having to not be in battle leaves other opportunities to either respawn or switch classes to be able use to raise. Is there any content in which you can't respawn and can't switch classes so you would have no other option?

I used it once back in CT when only three people survived on my Atomos lane and both healers were dead.

But since you couldn't raise them in combat, they could have just released and been fine.

I've raised random people I see dead when out and about. Other than that, not really very useful.

I wish SE would remove the Unique status with them beinv unusable in battle. I tend to use them after a fight just to save them the walk back. Especially the healer if they go down.

But with them being unusable in battle there is no justification for limiting how many can be held.

Is there any content in which you can't respawn and can't switch classes so you would have no other option?

I've had a few cases where I was heading somewhere as a DOL job and ran across someone lying dead somewhere. Since you can't cross-class Raise into DOL jobs and I couldn't switch jobs without losing some of the GP I'd built up and which I'd need in a moment, that left me with no options. Having a Phoenix Down would be nice in those circumstances.

Uncapping the quantity would certainly help there though - I might be willing to spare an inventory slot to the off chance that I run across someone who needs a raise, but it would be more trouble than it's worth to have to go restock it every time.

I have NEVER been able to use this.

Can't use in combat, have to be in party.

The most WTF item in the game.

Someone once used one on me when I died while pushing my luck as an underlevelled DPS in a FATE and all the healers were too busy getting back on their mounts once the FATE had ended. But that's it. Never had to use mine. The only thing I ever do is discard them when I need to accept a quest reward (since you can only carry one, there are certain quests can't be completed without dropping your current phoenix down because they too will reward you with one).

It's a shame because it's one of these non-food items that FF players have come to know when they met tougher content in singleplayer FFs or were doing some sort of restricted playthrough that makes the player rely more on items. I didn't even realise the Phoenix Down even existed in this game until I was most of the way to 50, and I was excited because I took it as a warning that the content would finally become tough soon. It didn't. It's current lack of use is a testament to how non-brutal the game is until you push to peak of the content, where you still can't use it. And all earlier difficulties are usually the product of a careless teammate, rather than challenging enemies. Even potions and ethers don't seem to see much use outside of some solo occasions.

Would be nice if it had an AoE use, but its combat restriction is by far the bigger issue. It would be much more favoured if they could lift the mid-combat restrictions in low-stress content. Such as non-hardmodes where nobody is eligible for a first-time bonus. Or anywhere in the overworld besides close proximity of rare FATEs.

While we're on classic items, an option to log out using a tent item would be nice so that we could rack up our rest bonus out in the field. Our player gets replaced by a tent model for the 20 seconds of log out time.

To tell you the truth I have never used one. I hung on to it in my inventory for the longest time and finally just discarded it.

i have never used one myself, or noticed anyone else ever using one. but i am curious... does the revived player become Weakened?
