Considering, classically, that SAM has been either a 2 hander or used a shield ( old FF games) I would imagine it to be a 2 hander DPS class. I honestly don't see any more healer or tank classes being added into the meta as 3 of each of those has already filled a good chunk of the build type options available for the FF meta (that would work).

I'd like to see them go the route of iaijutsu with it, could make for some interesting stance mechanics. Even a iaijutsu stance and a kenjutsu stance would be fun. Autoattacks go away but increase damage in iaijutsu and kenjustu would have autoattacks but would lower weaponskill damage.

Melee BRD!!! Though that honestly would be a ton of fun.

Naw, last I saw samurai it was pre-ninja days so I would assume enough is in right now to see what's actually coming in the future though

How will SAM have any rear positional skills if the lore of Bushido is to fight 'fair and square' and to not use deception? To give them only flanks would make their DPS too easy I think on the other hand. If they do get rear positionals, I would want them to have a gap-closer like Shoulder Tackle, but they dash through to the rear of the mob. Would be super cool.

Also I wonder if they'd share Maiming sets with DRG, or Striking sets with MNK? In FFXI, SAM got heavy armor but also light armor (gi/leather/osodes)

I for one would not mind seeing a ninja/samurai dps team. on a side note a dual wielding samurai tank sounds great too...

SAMs have never dual wielded in FF games outside of equipping special abilities. In fact, they usually got bonuses or special abilities that enhance their TWO HANDED prowess.

    FFT/FFXI in particular:

Hasso: Grants a bonus to attack speed, accuracy, and Strength when using two-handed weapons, but increases recast and casting times.
Doublehand: Wield a weapon with both hands, increasing its destructive power.

Doesn't mean they can't change that for FFXIV. You use FFXI as an example, but they went and had Dark Knight use Scythes in FFXI, never before used by Dark Knights in a Final Fantasy outside of maybe 1 weapon that was called a scythe and classified as an Axe in game.

They could but they probably won't and here's why. Dark Knight is an abstract idea. There isn't a historical class of warrior that you can really put behind it. Paladin and Dark knight are based on the classical western knight. As such there is no basis as to what their weapon should be, and as such they have wielded a huge variety of weapons of their history in the final fantasy series.

Samurai, however, is a bit different. We are talking about a very japanese historical concept being put into a game that is coded in its homeland. Classical samurai wielded katana with 2 hands and rarely drew their wakizashi for battle. The niten-ryu style that Miyamoto Musashi made so famous was the exception and only because he was such a skilled combatant. Now, I think that if they wanted to do Samurai sword styles, thats very possible. Meshing stances based on actual styles would be really neat. I kinda did a quick synopsis in a previous post.

Dual wielding Samurai would be a huge departure from the classical Samurai class in the FF series and as such might upset alot of fans. I don't see them changing that formula.

Eh, no, historically samurai used spear, bow and firearms as their main weapon during different time period, the katana was not actually the go to weapon. So really 1 sword isn't any more "accurate" than dual wielding. And consider the popularity of dual wielding in media, I don't see why a bunch o people would be upset about it.

Final fantasy histories, not actual histories. Otherwise we'd have spear wielding everything. Paladins would probably be wielding maces or axes. Monks would probably not be wielding whatever those knuckles they have are....

Japanese and American popular media identifies the Samurai with his Daisho. Samurai will wield some sort of Katana. Final fantasy Samurai have always wielded 2 handed katana, just as ninjas have always had the dual wield trait.
