What To Do with Untradable Gear

No (or almost no) blue/green item is Convertable into materia, but most of them can be traded into your Grand Company for a small number of Grand Company seals via the "Expert Delivery" option. These items are also Desynthable if you've chosen the right desynth class for that piece of gear as one of your three desynth classes. Only the latest items should be non-deliverable/non-desynthable, such as Law gear, Esoterics gear, Alexander gear, Alexander Savage gear, and Ravana/Bismark Extreme weapons. You also can't deliver/desynth relics, including crafter/gatherer Supra and Lucis items, and anything storeable in the armoire. (Oh, and the non-head i70 token turn-in crafter body equips can't be desynthed STILL - and I'm still bitter about that!) I think everything else, you can deliver or break.

Besides converting to materia, desynthing into materials, delivering for seals, and saving them to use as glamour items or for another class you're newly leveling, there's really not much else you can do with them.

And they can be converted, and they can be desynthed. So, really, they get the best of all worlds when it comes to that stuff.

(aside: Still wish the HW quests gave Aetherial gear instead of HQ crafted. Same effect for people leveling, except it wouldn't have tanked the market, ruining mid-game (51-59) crafting forever.)
