It's ridiculous to say that keeping gear sets on the server would be to demanding. The game current stores all the various game currencies you obtain and every item in your inventory and armory chest, as well as retainers. The servers also store your equipped gear and their condition, glamours, dye color. As well as all the status effects you obtain at any given moment, state of each action, etc. I could go on. It would be no problem to store people's gear sets, macros and hotbar configurations on the server. They just don't want to spend the time and money making this possible. It's not a vital enough problem in their eyes.
SE's attitude has always been it's easier to come up w/ excuses why they can't do things than to just go ahead and do them. The TP bars is a good example. They said that they couldn't show TP bars it would overwhelm new-players and make the display too cluttered and would negatively impact the game. Some may have believed actually believe this to be the case. But eventually they decided to go ahead and try to make it work, and they did.
Instead of saying "no we can't do this because of such and such" they should spend some time trying to find a way to get things to working, instead of procrastinating over it like a college student.
