Do i need to level up my job? at the same time as I level my toon?

I am currently level 23..or 24 toon wise, but I saw yesterday from the ehhh..hunting log?..that i am level 1 archer....

I plan to become a bard at level 30 and then move on to level 50 to pick up the machinist job....

But..maybe i dont have to go bard? Can i stay archer to level 50?

I'm loving the story quest so far, and i dont realy wanna go back and farm those small critters to advance the hunting log job levels...OR..do I have to?

    You don't have to.
Job levels are equivalent to your classes' levels.

Your Bard will be the same level as your Archer

This is true for all jobs

The hunting log is just there for exp, and some achievements. Not sure if any titles are connected to it. Although when you get into a GC they will have a hunt log for rank advancement. Bard is considered the "job" for archer, all classes have them except the 3 new ones as they are job classes already. You don't need to pick up the job class but it is extremely helpful for the new skills you will get, some would even flame you for not picking it up. There are not many level 50 base classes out there most everyone will pick up the job for obvious reasons, extra skills being one of them.

Also to unlock the Bard job quest you need to level Pugilist to atleast 15. So you could do the hunting log along with that to level faster.

What you're thinking of as your character's level is really the level of your current class. Once you start unlocking multiple classes, each will have its own level. So you're a level 24 Archer, but if you unlock Pugilist, you'll start off as a level 1 Pugilist when you equip the Pugilist weapon (a Weathered Hora you'll get from the quest that unlocks the class). Each time you switch classes, you'll switch to the level that that class is at. There's a tab in the Character window for showing you your current levels in all the different classes.

Jobs are a bit different, as they're an extension to the class they're based on. A Bard, for instance, is still a type of Archer, and once unlocked will be whatever level your Archer class is at and use all your Archer skills. In order to unlock Bard, you'll need to be at least level 30 as Archer and at least level 15 as Pugilist. You can be higher than those minimums, but it's generally not recommended to go very much past 30 before unlocking the class's associated job.

The hunting log isn't something you level really, just a list of certain mobs that will give you a bit of extra bonus XP, each one listed with a suggested level at which you could take them on. (You can actually do them before or after the listed level, they'd just be more difficult or easy accordingly.) The only thing leveling-like about it is that you need to complete one tier of 10 log entries before you can open up the next tier.

Definitely gonna need more than 6 buttons. Get used to using a keyboard or gamepad.

One more thing about the hunting log: There are several different hunting logs.

You have an Archer hunting log, and if you unlock Pugilist you'd get a Pugilist hunting log, and the same for every other class you add. As far as these class hunting logs go, you only get the hunting log's XP bonus if you kill the mobs as that class (or its associated job, which as mentioned earlier, is still considered to be that class). If you complete all 50 entries in a particular class's hunting log, that earns you an Achievement and a level 50 (Item level 55) ring for that class. (That ring is far outclassed by other ones easily available at level 50, though, so is probably only significant as an achievement to say you've completed something. Some people care about that sort of thing and some don't.)

Then there's also another hunting log for your Grand Company. The GC hunting log rewards GC seals instead of an XP bonus, and it doesn't matter which class/job you use to kill the mobs. A couple of the ranks of GC promotions require having completed a tier of the GC hunting log. (I believe it's the first tier of the GC hunting log in order to become a Sergeant Third Class, and the second tier of the hunting log in order to become Second Lieutenant.)

I know I've heard from other people who got to the point of trying to get a GC promotion and being confused because they thought they'd finished the appropriate hunting log tier, but had actually confused it with the class hunting logs. The promotion requirements are based on the GC hunting log, not your archer (or any other class) hunting log.

    EDIT:
And I forgot, the third tier of the GC hunting log, while it isn't needed for promotions, does have an achievement associated with it, one that rewards a mammet minion that carries your GC's banner.
