Not "hardcore" enough. Rift is the antithesis of FFXIV. Rift launched with four PVP scenarios, ten instances available over multiple levels and in multiple difficulties, one raid, two raid style open world events, one open world raid-style boss, and zone wide invasions. That's just content. The game itself was designed and implemented in a way that worked across all levels. The game isn't even a year old yet, and they have had five major updates, each adding more content along with fine tuning of systems.

FFXIV launched almost completely devoid of content. The game was designed and implemented in a way that didn't work at all. Over the course of a year, they still haven't caught up with what Rift launched with. They are still making changes to things that should have been decided in pre-production in nearly every patch.

Trion showed us how good an MMO launch can be and how quickly they could develop content. SE is an example of how bad and slow it can be.
